Hmmm bit uncalled for?

Maybe Sony should learn from all the other DSLR manufactures that do have mid-priced models with advanced/enthusiast features. Even Minolta had well featured mid-priced model!

A1000 does not accept that Sony can make mistakes, or that not all lower to mid point buyers are p&s users.

I'll retract my comments and views if Sony stomp to the top of the sales chart and have a monster market share this year.
Some posters want to see things get worse for users, A1000 is a good example.
Sony could have easily made the A5xx series a compelling near essential purchase for A mount users, "AND" made it a killer camera for buyers who might not have an investment in any mount.

What can you say about a £600 that does not even have Program shift? Not a lot really.
It's embarrassing to have budget film body from years past out spec your latest greatest model in some respects (dynax 5 a good example)

Barry Fitzgerald wrote above among other things:

Pardon my ignorance but reading the specification of the A550 this is what is stated under Program function:
Program Exposure (with shift)

Program exposure mode on the A550 can be shifted, this means that you can select one of a variety of equal exposures by turning the control dial, by default the exposure is shifted by shutter speed (indicated as PS), you can choose to shift by aperture (PA) by changing the 'Control dial set' option in the custom menu.
So there is a program shift of a kind I recognise from my A350 & A700 except the A700 has two wheels instead of one on the A350 and now A550. What "program shift" is it that BF is referring to that is missing and what does it do the above Program Shift cannot accomplish? For all my ignorance I do not feel a "short changed" on my current cameras so I would like to know what I am missing. Please enlighten me.

Maybe you should re-check your information.

User manual, no menu choice for aperture or shutter with the control dial, no mention of P shift anywhere.
Browse the preview on dp, and you will see that there is no option in the menu for the above
Also we have had a number of users confirm that the camera does not have P shift. So unless something weird happened..you're wrong! lol

Which brings me back to me point, it's a joke to not have this basic feature, add to that all the other stuff missing..it's poorly featured in my eyes.

I do not have the manual but simply quoted from this DPReview page: http://www.dpreview.com/previews/sonydslra550/page5.asp
Program shift is clearly indicated there. I am sorry if DPReview have got this wrong. I would like to wait for David Kilpatrick's extensive review. I am sure he will enlighten us on this particular and other operational points.

I think you nailed the Sony business strategy, from their marketing standpoint it’s probably a very clear and good business plan. I’m sure they know their client’s wants/needs better than us.
The bottom line is, if you’re in the A700 - 900 user group, why should you care about the other one.
I'm not so sure they do. I happen to know that Sony does market research and it is pretty extensive at that. However, what the market research does not take into account is the word of mouth sales Sony achieved through Minolta users and.... older Sony Cybershot users (think 828 and R1 types) recommendations.

Many of them are starting to look away and recommend other cameras from 1,000.00 and under this year for the first time ever. I can't ever recall doing so before (and its been a long standing admiration of Sony camera equipment for me... since 2002).

All those "sales reps" account for something, and do have an impact on Sony's success last year. I'm willing to bet that the reports for marketshare are down for Sony this year on Alpha. We will know soon. I think the A200/300/350 carried Sony quite far last year but this years offerings are stale in comparison.

Toru Katsumoto used to run Handycam, he is the big guy in charge here of Alpha overall.

What I feared to happen with Sony Alpha is happening, same as it happened to the once glorious and interesting Cybershot division that is now a spread of lack luster flashy complicated cameras.

If Sony sells a gangload of the new Alphas, Ill retract my part about it being a bad business decision, but I will never retract my feelings on these cameras. These are the first cameras from Sony that I've not been interested in yet, ever (unless you include all the cybershots since the R-1 was shelved as well).

I don't think a DOF button is really necessary any more, for the reason that it is inaccurate at larger apertures due to the less opaque focussing screens used on DSLRs (as DK has explained on here) and the simple fact that you can preview your image almost instantly with digital.

As for face detect - I can't see why anyone wouldn't want this. It's not really in the same category as scene modes - it's useful to all users.

Granted the high price of the new entry models defeats that strategy to some extent.

Therein lies the problem, you nailed it.

I almost buy what Sony is selling there, until I see prices and competition.

Plus, it makes me wonder why people buy compacts so much more than DSLRs, to me its about intimdation sure, but to what extent? I think price and size have a heck a lot more to do with those numbers than just being intimidated.

But what do I know ;)

See other thread - there is also no custom option as described by dPreview. They just cut and pasted some wrong text from another report.

No Program shift? Now that is crazy. Has it been removed because it interferes with the dynamic exposure scale thingy on the back?

Well, it the exposure thingy had been correctly designed to be reciprocal, program shift would have worked superbly well. As it is, the exposure thingy exactly replicates the program, and you can use it to see how the program changes with certain conditions - but the central index can not be moved, nor will the entire scale move over. You may well be right; Sony has sacrificed a valuable function in order to more easily enable a slick display feature.

Here's some more bad news for you - and for me, as it has lost me some impressive toadstool colony pix today - if I return tomorrow, I'll bet the condition of the fungi has changed or kids have kicked them all into nothing.

Auto ISO defaults to picking very high ISO speeds as soon as it can - and it ranges up to ISO 1600, and you can't limit the range, and ISO 1600 despite the improvement in the A550 is not a professional usable setting for most subjects (acceptable for concerts, sports, etc, but not for pictures taken in daylight). The auto range has even selected ISO 1600 for fully sunlit close-ups - 1/125th at f/11, but 1/30th would have perfectly sharp with SS at 80mm. The A350's limited auto range of ISO 100-400 is far more useful and can be relied on not to wreck your original raw for serious uses.

I noticed this behaviour with Aperture priority mode and the shutter speed remaining stuck at 1/40th no matter what I did with the aperture - the camera was running the range from ISO 200 to 1600. I had to test this setting, but it's REALLY annoying to have pictures I would have liked to have kept spoiled by 800 and 1600 ISO which in reality are not some miracle quality equal to other cams at ISO 200 and 400 - they are just acceptable fast ISO speeds much any non-Sony APS-C camera.

Auto ISO can be useful when its operating range can be controlled by a menu setting. On the A550 (and presumably the A500) it can not be controlled, and it has been given free access to settings up to 1600. Lesson: do not use (I did switch to ISO 200 fixed after taking a few shots on Auto, but did not go back to reshoot the pix).

The most logical solution is to have a user defined setting for auto ISO. I though 800 was ok on the 5d, but again a choice is best here.
A200 I felt could be at 800 also, whilst it trails the 5d for low light, if you watch your exposure you can get decent quality.

Which brings me onto my other point, is the metering less cautious this time around?

So far the metering in OVF mode is looking good. I'm not getting much need to use over-ride, which is a good thing as it's slow to use on single control wheel cameras.

I can not yet say much about QV metering which uses an entirely different method, except that my QV shots have all been consistent with expectations.

There is definitely no need to apply a permanent plus or minus, on the basis of the range of conditions shot so far. Also, the new 3 inch screen is better than I have implied. It is far more accurate in colour - none of the drab yellow-looking previews from the A700, even the A900 is a bit lacking in contrast. The A550 screen is bright and shows full saturation and contrast effectively - a true preview of the final image.
