David Kilpatrick wrote:If the process you mention can't remove the dirt, then it is not loose dust and therefore will not be shaken off by the vibration-based sensor cleaning.

It may be any of the following: particles of mucus, caused by anyone coughing or sneezing in the room shortly before the sensor is exposed for cleaning, or otherwise; particle of greasy adhesive dust, such as dandruff, aerially carried cooking oil particles, oil particles from vehicle exhaust, and some types of pollen which are sticky; or particles of oil and perhaps fine particles resulting from mechanical wear inside the camera (or both combined).

But it's definitely sticky dust not just dry dust, because the sensor cleaning mechanism is pretty good at shifting that. It is no more effective than any of the similar mechanisms in Canon, Nikon and Pentax (all work the same way, and have about the same effect). It's slightly less effective than Olympus's ultrasonic membrane.

David, I have a 5 year old a100, which is on its last legs, and still manages a better job of cleaning than the a580!

Since my previous post, Sony have got their act together, and the a580 is winging its way to Pencoed courtesy of RM special delivery. I am assured that it will be thoroughly cleaned, and the cleaning mechanisms checked.

Sure, but it only takes one greasy or sticky aerosol to enter the camera at the wrong moment and the sensor can be provided with 'dust' that simply won't shift with vibration. My first A700 had 'factory dust' as well as other faults. It's not unusual and 'factory dust' tends to be sticky and to remain there.

Once properly clean, your sensor will hopefully stay as clean as any other model.

Both my a700 bodies were catching dust like crazy while they were new. It took a few wet cleans before the dust stopped setting on the sensor.
Then the same happened with my a55 body.

Then both my Nex5 and an a500 never behaved like that.

That must be an issue with the surface charge that happens in the manufacturing process at certain facilities.

My a700 caught dust when new, as well--funny thing, when I switched from the plastic-mounted DT 18-70mm to the metal-mounted Tamron 17-50mm, the dust stopped appearing completely.

I never used plastic mount lenses in the young days of my a700's. The only plastic-mount thing I really used is the SAM 35f1.8, but that came later and got use with the a55, mostly.
And I bet that plastic thing is quite antistatic...

I believe the SAM lenses are made with better "plastic" than the old kit lens. The difference on the mechanism will help also: no more "vacuum" effect...

Much of my "dust" was little curly plastic shavings...no such occurrence with my 35/1.8 or 85/2.8.

My a580 arrived back this morning, and it appears that the sensor was misaligned, so the camera was faulty after all. It has been repaired, cleaned and tested. Whether the issue has been resolved, remains to be seen, as I can only tell once the camera has been used.

Update:

Having taken some test shots yesterday, there was still a little debris on the sensor, but nothing to compare with the previous build up. This was quickly dealt with by the Air Rocket, and the next test shots proved to be clean.

I will be following up on this in the weeks ahead, so stand by to be further bored in the future!

Very much interested as all my precious dSLRs are dust eaters. Will Sony pay a fortune to adopt the ultrasonic dust removal found in Olympus cameras?

I have not tried the Olympus system, but I doubt it will work on the severe case Monsieur Adget had -I'm not sure about yours...
