Henry,
Turbulent times then, turbulent times now. Unfortunately somethings have not changed.
I am enjoying your old photos as much as you enjoying reviewing them. Thank you.

On another day in a different part of London I saw this woman selling ice cream from a truck, but she had no customers. I bought one from her and took her photo.

I recall that in 2001 we were in London twice: April and July. April was cold and raining and then July was unexpectedly hot. The weather reports said that they were having a heat wave so July was hotter than normal. Of course, it wasn't Texas hot, but still while walking around all day it was hotter than was comfortable. Still, this woman didn't have any customers. People were walking by so I stopped to give her a little business, talk, and take her photo.

:) Not sure what happened to my post there ! I think I had tried to say something like,

"Nice picture of the Ice-cream Van Henry. Nothing is nicer on a hot day than finding one on your route. As we don't get that many hot days they have to work hard to make money when the opportunity arises. Apparently it is a cut throat business with rival vans competing for the best spots. (Things can get nasty, apparently). Perhaps this is why I've never seen a lady ice-cream van attendant before. But, everything is different in London. It really is a different experience to the rest of the UK :) ."

Ah! A memorable year. The year I was picking myself up after nearly 'crossed the bar', as we who have been to the sea in ships say, twice in about 36 hours. Shortly after the Hatfield rail crash train schedules were all over the place and whilst trying to rush for a probable last train home I brought on a cardiac arrest. Had another in the morning two days later whilst in intensive and being plumbed up with a blood sampling box on my chest. My new Dynax 7 camera in a back pack can be thanked for keeping me concious when I collapsed on that rail station platform. I didn't want to lose it and the medics in the ambulance were puzzled why I kept asking where my back pack was.

Back before that even here is another Phantom shot

Composition may be a little 'off' for some as there is more space behind the moving jet than in front, but then context provided by that catapult shuttle would be lost.

Now this one is from Vigland Park in Oslo where I spent an expensive, in film, afternoon running off many frames. I could do a show of just these but I will hang fire on that. The Ark was in port, well anchored in the sound, and many trips ashore by small boat provided opportunity to visit not only Vigland but the Fram and Kon-Tiki museums too.

Unfortunately, we saw less of the UK than I would have liked even though we spent more than 2 weeks there in July 2001 (in addition to 3-4 days in April). When we arrived in London it was at the end of our 4 months of traveling in Europe going from Greece to England. When we arrived in London we were sort of burnt out and didn't see much more of the country. We did get up to Birmingham to visit for a few days with friends and with them we visited Stratford and the area around there. Also, after getting back to London from Birmingham we went up to Oxford for the day. It is really pitiful that we didn't do more, but we were sort of traveled out by that point and all the hassle of figuring out transportation to other places, finding hotels, etc. just seemed to be too much trouble -- no tablets or netbooks and no wifi everywhere then to make the job a bit easier. :D We keep talking about going back and seeing more someday though.

Lionel,
Very illuminating narrative about the the "black' box. :D That was a nice shot of that Phantom taking off as well.
I am certainly enjoying the contributions on the thread so far and the umpteen directions the thread is taking (as a blast
should do anyway. )

With best regards,
Sury

Thanks Sury, I liked those flower shots in your first post on this thread. What species of moth, I think, is that on the mauve flower dipping its wick into the yellow centre?

Another couple from Vigland Park, late 1970, all of which were shot on Agfa CT-18 using a Minolta SRT101 and either the standard 57mm f1.7 Rokkor or a Tamron 135mm f4.5. Autumn was well advanced and Oslo that late in the year had a tendency for sullen skies. But it felt warm because we had just come from well up into the Arctic Circle exercising as a part of a NATO fleet.

With this first one take note of the wrought iron gate, probably steel in reality, at centre front. The groups of figures in my earlier example are amongst those seen here.

Image

Here is that iron gate from the other side outlined against the sky

Image

Now for a change a whale shark beneath the Kon-Tiki raft. The whale shark is in fact stuffed, or a life size model, I disremember which. This was a difficult shot for transparency film requiring a bit of flash with a timed exposure to allow enough background, a wideish aperture with the lens and flash guns up against the glass to prevent reflections. Camera held in one hand, one flash in the other and a colleague holding another flash. Included some mental arithmetic too with guide numbers and a good dose of guestimate.

Image

I had better give it a rest soon before somebody gets annoyed.

Lionel,
You got me there. I have no idea or I should say, I am completely ignorant about the Moth species. It just happened to be in
the backyard when I had my camera with me.

I love the steel gate. It looks very intricate from afar and equally tantalizing from close up too.
Is there any significance to those statues in the park?

With best regards,
Sury

Here is one from a winery in the central coast area of California as it is generally called, and somewhere near the
town of Paso Robles. "Green" way of delivering your wine.

I like the Whale Shark Lionel. I don't think you should worry about over posting; I can't imagine anyone on this forum tiring of such a fascinating set of pictures :)

Sury, I fear the lack of suspension on that bike would unsettle the sediment ;) . Shame on me. I'd rather have the non green version if it could fit a couple of cases more!

This was taken between my legs while lying on the ground with my backpack with radio and M-16 laying across my legs. Taken with an Olympus XA.
Let me guess- the prc77 and M16A1? C-rats w/ a B2 unit?
