View from my work

Saw this comment from Kevin:

Dang, I need a job where I can use my camera...I work in a locked-down super-private psychiatric facility. Eh, but at least I'm accruing some vacation time!

and thought it might be fun to share some pictures from the area surrounding our workplaces if possible (as for where I work we are not allowed to take photos inside the building). Well, it's going to be a bit of a poor start though as I dont have that many photos from around my job online as of right now :-/
Anyway, maybe can put up some more later

The view from my window is over a pretty newly built residential area, although not exactly the view from my window this is one of the houses I can easily overlook from my office:

There is a little harbour just a couple of minutes walk away...


A pretty nice view over the area on the opposite side of the building from where I'm sitting. Not taken with a KM/Sony, but hope it's ok anyway


In the summertime boats occasionly pass... (at least taken with a SonyEricsson )


Ok, this is just for reference - no artistry here... but you can see my building, and even my window if I were to tell you where



Realize these are a bit dull maybe... Will try to put some new/old ones up when I get some more time

Well, it's not really an assignment - it was just a thread for those who want to share pictures of what their work or the surroundings of it looks like
Although in my mind a "locked-down super-private psychiatric facility" sounds like place with great potential for intriguing photos

Interesting pictures Zeb. I am envious that you have the lovely watery views, with a small harbour and boats nearby as well - great stuff. Is there a coffee shop nearby? This is very important to the workplace I find .

First some of my handiwork on the night shift:





The EXIF data won't tell you that I did these with Expo dry-erase markers on a whiteboard, but I did! We're a pediatric psych unit, treating kids from 3 to 12 years old for up to a week or more at a time. I do these drawings on the whiteboards because the rest of the unit is very plain, and I'd like to make a case for having a mural in our community area. It is definitely not a scary or depressing place; there are some sad stories, but kids come here to get better, not worse!

And now some random photography on the unit:







Sorry for the image size. I realize the vertical shots aren't practical for most monitor sizes, but I'm new to this presentation format and thought that I'd be able to govern image width x height. The last three photographs are from the a700 and Minolta 50/1.7

Wow Kevin, you are quite an artist! I'm very impressed by your handiwork on the white board
As for the three B&W shots they are great too, excellent use of DOF.
I think I have an older version of that keyboard at work...

Very good drawings Kevin.. I'm sure they set the mood of the day and add some colourful delight and wit to the scene of 'healing'.
Black and White photos are nice too.. they would look good on a wall if enlarged and printed.

Wow Kevin, those drawing on the whiteboard are awesome. I should think they are appreciated by the kids and staff alike The b&w office type shots are very good as well - I could alomost believe I am there - which is actualy a bit depressing to think of being back at work on Saturday evening, the power of photos

Thanks guys for all of the kind words. The kids like the art, but its probably more appreciated by the staff that have to be in here day in and day out. The kids would hardly know the difference if it was there or not, they're playing with legos or watching the latest Pixar movie. Sometimes, though, they get inspired to draw and color, and I do like it when they draw and color.

The photography was fun. I had my camera with me one night and was very board, so I just started using the 50mm to shoot at its closest focusing distance at full aperture to get the very least DOF and the very most bokeh. The package in the first B&W picture is "Premium" Saltine crackers, a favorite on the unit. The book in the last image is Frederik Pohl's Gateway. It's a truly great sci-fi read, though the author unwisely followed it with three more books that were pretty rotten.
