That was awesome! I bought a "bargain" quality lens on a lark for $19. The marks on the front are on the edges and hardly visible. It's actually a pretty good lens, within its limitations. So, I wouldn't want one TOO beat up, but I say if on a budget.....
Now one thing that he didn't try that I would like to know is, what about marks on the rear element? Or more specifically, I have a speck almost dead-center in my 17-50 and it really annoys me to see it. It's not like a tiny bit of dust that you normally can't even see -- this one is large enough to be painfully obvious. I'm trying to ignore it. I've heard that dust on the rear element is more visible than on the front, though.
