Storm Clouds

Here are some shots of storm clouds, all of them from El Chalten, Argentina, not far from that glacier I posted recently.

BTW all the photos are underexposed and the contrast was increased so they look more dramatic, it wasn't exactly like that.

Hi,

They are kind of magneticly charged...I feel like they are drawing me into them, inside the storm. I suppose that shows they are successfully converted / post-processed!

They have the appeal of 1935-55-era Hollywood B&W movies or even some of the movies that Clark Gable starred in with Vivien Leigh like "Gone with the wind" and the like.

Hi roysmith...I Enjoyed looking at your photos. They are dark, but I like the treatment. No. 1 is my favorite, as if the the sky has opened just to let a little bit of heaven shine on Earth... I might like to see a little bit lighter snow on the others, but that is just my opinion. Thanks for sharing. John

Those BWs are great. I remember when I was at Rugby School, in the photographic society and aged 15 using a half-frame Olympus Pen D. We had an annual competition, and I did manage to win a prize despite the small format and my little 8 x 6 print - the usual competition size was 12 x 16 or 20 x 16 mounts. But the winner overall was a very wealthy young man called David Brostoff, whose family appeared to spend the winter holidays skiing in the Alps, and had equipped with him with a Rolleiflex. He used 8X red filter on mountain snow scenes with dramatic skies and made the prints on Agfa Record Rapid, a lovely matt warm-tone chlorobromide paper. Actually, he did not make the prints, he got them made by a paid printer which is one reason the judge only gave a placing to one of his many entries, even if that placing was first!

Those red-filtered Alpine snow and peak shots made a great impression on me, and I started experimenting with yellow, orange and red filters and high contrast papers. Your pix remind of the sort of effect and tones I wanted to get, and which the best BW landscape photographers in the 1960s often did get. Of course now Channel Mixer and curved controls in Photoshop can get us there without even losing the colour original!

I guess I could try making them a bit lighter, initially I wanted a dark ambience but maybe that's too much

Hi roysmith- I like the dark atmosphere of your photos. I was just expressing my tastes. They are a neat interpretation of the scenes... One and three of the second set are wonderful.. I agree with DK's comparing to old B/W landscapes. If old school B/W film wasn't so expensive I would shoot it. Me gustan mucho! John
