Hawaii Five-O shooting in Waikiki

All day today the new Hawaii Five-O TV show was shooting in Waikiki. I didn't know they would be here, but this morning about 8:00 AM I was down at the beach and they were getting all set up. I hung around and took a few photos as they were doing some takes with the show's stars and lots of extras. Then late in the afternoon I was at the beach again and assumed they would be long gone, but they were still there shooting.

I wonder if that series revival will be a success Henry? forty years later. They've got re-runs of Magnum PI on one of the channels early in the morning, that was a show that was usually quite entertaining, back in it's day.
There's a lot of the river life in the first one I looked at on Vietnam, it's a good thing they (obviously) don't have esturine crocodiles there. I look in wonder at some of those boats with about two inches of freeboard loaded up with produce, amazing, and the motorbikes loaded up with huge baskets of some other produce....all interesting shots Henry.

I think maybe I have seen about half of one of the old shows. It just wasn't something that appealed to me. It is still shown in rerun on channels that show old shows and also it is still shown here in Hawaii on a local channel. I haven't seen the new one, but I will check it out now that I saw them shooting. I know they shoot all over the island. By the way, during the summer I was walking up on the road that is right on the coast at the foot of Diamond Head and saw the Black Pearl (Pirates of the Caribbean) ship sailing by. Later in the day I was reading the newspaper and saw that they were making the new movie here in Hawaii. It was a cool sight seeing that old-style sailing ship going by in the ocean right off Diamond Head (away from the tourist area of Waikiki).

Yeah, back in the '80s I liked the Magnum PI show. It had a sense of humor.

There was a big crew with multiple big video cameras and lots of equipment. They had also set up an old-style Hawaiian surf rental kiosk. Many extras -- lots of pretty girls in bikinis and some guys in board shorts. Also, although you can't see it there are quite a few people gathered around watching.

There's a lot of the river life in the first one I looked at on Vietnam, it's a good thing they (obviously) don't have esturine crocodiles there. Yeah, especially down in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam people live on the water and spend a lot of time in it too. I heard that there used to be crocodiles and that is why there are eyes painted on the bow of the boats. It was supposed to scare the river monsters away. I also heard that the crocodiles have pretty much been killed off though.

There was an entertaining Australian film released in 2000 with the title "The Dish". It is a docudrama set at the site of a large Australian radio telescope at the time of the first manned lunar landing in 1969. The "dish" will be relaying the transmissions from Apollo 11 to the rest of the world during the time that Oz is facing the moon. If you are interested, there is more about the film at:

In the film there is a scene where the American ambassador is attending a party in the nearby small town to celebrate the occasion, and a local band is hired to provide music for dancing after the dinner. They are to start by playing the Australian national anthem, followed by the national anthem of the United States.

All goes well with the Australian anthem, and then the band starts into a rousing rendition of . . . the theme from Hawaii Five-0!

Since the film is supposed to be reasonably close to actual events, I assume that this actually happened.

I wouldn't doubt that it happened Tom, I'd be almost willing to bet some wag went and changed the score beforehand and nobody noticed the switch happened...never let a chance go by..for a legpull.
The really sad part was, what happened to those crucial tapes, the format that they were done in at the time wasn't compatible with the TV of the times so the event of man's (Armstrong) first step onto the moon looked like rubbish, but the actual transmission from the moon and reception by the big dish was supposedly crystal clear, only we never got to see it like that. Recently there was a big search to find the original tapes that were done at the telescope because NASA said they couldn't find them (they wanted to re-do the translation with todays tech...great idea) and thought we still had them...and I never heard whether they found them or not. Be a shame if they have been lost.

Yes I had a look through the Hawaii Five-O one as well Henry. Check the lens that guy is carrying..wowzer. I also had a look at the ones in Africa that had Elephants, (some great shots in them) whats the deal with the ghost Elephants?

I don't know if there is more than one name for them, but several years ago I was told that the name for a slightly different (it was more cylindrical in shape and also enclosed the lens) sound-suppression box was "the blimp".

I would like to see it. Yes, I am aware of the use of the facilities in Australia during Apollo 11.

On July 20, 1969 I was 12 years old and I clearly remember being with my two best friends, Ricky and Randy, and lying on the grass in front of Randy's house at night and staring up at the moon and talking about how amazing it was that Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were up there right at that very moment. Later I went home and stayed up late, I think it was midnight or later, to see the live video of Armstrong stepping onto the moon's surface. Very grainy, contrasty, and indistinct. It is sad to know that the original was much higher quality and has maybe been lost forever.

I also had a look at the ones in Africa that had Elephants, (some great shots in them) whats the deal with the ghost Elephants?

Thanks. I was in Kenya for a bit over 3 weeks in 1991 and then in 1993 spent 10 weeks on a camping safari starting in Capetown, South Africa and ending in Nairobi, Kenya going through South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, and Kenya. I would love to go again and I would also get better photos.

The Ghost Elephants were in Botswana. According to local legend ghosts of departed elephants roam the countryside once a year on the full moon night in October. So far, I have taken the only known photo of them because the apparitions typically turn to mist and dissipate in the presence of humans or human technology. I took off all my clothes and thoroughly rubbed my body and camera down with fresh elephant dung and then hid out in the bush inside a termite mound to get this single photo. There was no chance to get a second one. The moment after the photo was taken there was only a fog and then nothing.

Things change. I can say that watching them shoot yesterday was interesting and the young ladies made it all much better.
