Simon Marsden R.I.P.

Renowned photographer Simon Marsden has passed away from heart problems, at the age of 63. He was a massive influence on me, ever since I saw his images in photo mags back in the late 70's & early 80's. He was noted for his striking, ethereal B&W infra red photographs of ruins, stone circles, and sculpture, and this is something I still strive to emulate in my work today. What is possibly his most famous image is the cover of the U2 album "The Unforgetable Fire", Of Moydrum Castle in Ireland. The photographic world will be poorer for his passing.

That's a shame whilst I was not a huge fan, but his work was interesting no question. He was very much into ruins, graveyards and spooky stuff. No harm in that it's not for everyone but we have to take our own path on this.

Sir Simon Marsden - or so he was styled, could never really work out whether was or not. Still, photographing so many stately homes and haunted castles, he might have been. I have one of his early books I think, and he was a big influence on me at the time.
