Well seen and carefully exposed to not burn out the highlights.
I like the subject, this iuxtaposition of the baby hand and the adult's arm with hair and tattoo, well arranged in bright-dark contrast. For my taste it could be cropped a bit tighter (I tilted it additionally), like I did in the attachment. Additionally I darkened the lower right corner in order to avoid distraction of the hand. But these manipulation are of course a matter of personal taste.

I see a lot of similar pictures from my Master Photo Digital magazine readers (MPA members) as this is a popular juxtaposition - but most are very obvious, tiny hand gripping finger of big hairy hand, tiny head cradled in hand. Your take is more original. I feel that a pro contest judge would immediately say the baby's arm should have been bare, as the white sleeve is both an unusual clothing item and dominates the tones of the subject. They would also suggest that the baby's hand should be more hand-shaped, that is slightly turned or caught from a different angle. Given those changes, what you have might be a WPPI/MPA etc exhibition shot, subject to technical quality making the grade.

Markus, I appreciate your efforts on the photo but my subjective feel is that they didn't do that much to the composition - not better nor worse. Don't get me wrong here, I really like to get feedback, especially constructive like that

DK, that's really interesting to know - I realise that a different angle of the hand would have been better, but this is the shot I got so... Next time!

Would have liked to have Yildiz views on the photo because she has some really profound and genuine thoughts behind all the photos I've seen her comment, but I realise I can't force someone to comment on my photos. Myself I am way to lazy and don't comment nearly as often as I should, so I guess in the long run it's my own fault if I don't get comments.

Hi Zeb - really like the latest one - the contrast between the bright / smooth face of your son, and the dark / more well featured ( ) look of his grandfather (I think, if memory serves from your previous pictures). I would have been tempted to crop the left a little so the faces are more central, but perhaps this makes the darker head dominate.

(Is there a small spot of glare or dust on the left of the photo - would it clone out?)

Thank you gentlemen!
I felt I better step in quickly before this nice thread became about something else this good subject doesn't deserve. It's finally snowed a little in Istanbul today and I tried to catch up with the ever-changing weather from snowy to sunny, though freezing cold through out the day.

Zeb, your subject matter is very hard to resist always. When you play the card of the little Dante in the pursuit of growth, it becomes hard not to come flocking in! Thank you for your kind and humbling approach which probably is the source of these photo compositions.

I've seen the first photo early in the day, then went away to think for a while and do some snow-shooting to clear my thoughts.

Here are a few of my thoughts: David gave a good description of what a judge would see as lacking in the photo, which I learned somethings from his approach also.

I think one of the things I was drawn to was the 'flying eagle' tattoo on the man's arm alongside child's hand. That tattoo deserves some more attention and be more visible hence becoming one of the materials that contrast with the soft and helpless gesture/fall of the child's hand. This is the hand gesture of a helpless child; a resigned, tired, letting-go-child's. (need not be Dante's) And I think you convey to the viewer that you're not decided with message of the photo yet and leave room for their thoughts...it looks unfinished..undecided... as though there's a follow-up but you won't show it...

But then, suddenly, later in the day you sent the second composition and this time you knew exactly what you wanted out of the photo with your subjects fully exposed this time. This time there are no questions to be answered for the viewer, the message is instant. The second anyone looks in that direction they know...they know it all, what you see in that child and the man...

The second one I like very much but I have to say that the childish innocence of the child; the hanging lower lip, his trusting leaning of the head, his assured looks against the rugged, elderly, deeply-shaped lifelines of someone who's seen it all did the photo the magnitude of good.

I'd love to see you take advantage of that tattoo with a child being's proximity and bonding too. I believe there's a strong photo in such a composition also.

And one day Dante should have a book to his name too...(perhaps before an other tiny baby arrives to crowd the scene because you captured this boy-child with father or babyboy with grandfather compositions rather well in your own style and a newcomer may just dillute this thick-blood-bondage of the 'boys' with frills and twirls...)

My couple of cents...but I'd put my money on this little toddler called Dante for sure! He is a model for keeps...
