Both Nikon and Canon now rely on some very deep menu item changes to customise camera behaviour, especially Nikon. These options are capable of so many combinations that if anything goes wrong (i.e. the Nikon fails to capture what should be a straightforward shot) instead of asking why this has happened, Nikon now say 'did you have focus mode X set to long or short X and were you using C with X and Y?'. If the result is anything less than you would expect from a point and shoot program DSLR at entry level, the immediate outcry is 'you do not know the camera well enough'.

Of course this is all nonsense. The purpose of these refined settings is to improve the performance of the camera over the P&S program mode of a D40X, not to somehow prevent it from functioning normally given a basic scene.

The more I use cameras like the D3/D3X and Canon 5D MkII, the more I appreciate the 'pure' approach of the A900. If I want 1/125th at f8 and focus on ten feet, then I want the simplest and most certain way of getting it. I don't want my camera to 'behave' differently according to custom programs - I want the camera to behave just one way, and I as the photographer will do the different behaviour stuff!

Mia Culpa, I did like the articulated lens. Apparently, I don't know all the capabilities of a tilt shift lens and since Sony doesn't have one, I won't worry about it for the moment.
