For flash indoor portraits, I usually use the M mode. Choose a speed around 1/15s & 1/30s. ISO400/800. Aperture depends on the lens and the subject.
Using ISO400/800 & slow speed allows to "bring back" some background lights. At ISO100, you usually get a bright person and a dark background (which might be what you want).

If you do this : Don't forget to gel you're flash with the filter, CTO for tungsten lights. And set you're WB to tungsten.

Why 1/15s? Isn't that slow and cause blur?

Agreed. My question was about blur due to camera shake at the slower speed. But you answered that question anyway.

Just to be clarify...If you are not using a flash 1/15 and even 1/30 will be will not eliminate motion blur if the subjects move (ie: head turns, coughs, moving arms, legs, hands, etc..). It is not the wide angle lens or the SS that allows the use of a slower shutter speed in this case, it is the burst of light from the flash that freezes the motion.

Yes, my answer was not complete.
1/15s makes the background reasonably bright and stabilisation makes the background reasonably sharp
flash freezes the subject to avoid subject blur

If you do this outdoors, you'll see a sharp frozen subject with motion blurry people in the background
