Don, you seem to be the only one rebutting me "so forcefully and so often" Ignorant on many aspects of photography? Not so. As stated before, just because someone has different techniques or needs does not make them ignorant of what others do or the means they use to employ them.

Oh, and "costing me bigtime?" I wonder how many people have banned my post, as opposed to banning yours. That's really too bad, in some ways, for, as I've said, you're a good photographer. You just don't know how to properly express your beliefs.

A) For those how can't grasp the obvious, let me state for the record that MPs are part of the image quality. While I wouldn't be satisfied with a 40 MP camera that had high noise and low TR/DR, neither would I be satisfied with a 3MP camera that was perfect in that respect.

B) David and others have debunked the DXOmark testing process already, but if you put so much store in them, than by all means get yourself a D3. Then you can spew in some Nikon forums.

I think Don should stand for the Senate..
He sure knows how to push issues, why not put that to some practical use?
Hey, if you make it all the way, I expect a few favours and freebies! lol

-Sonolta
I never said that more MP on small sensors wasn't a technological problem, as you seem to imply. I said that FF vs APS-C are, in effect, different camera systems. That's not from experience, it's really just echoing David's article.

I WANT the technological barriers overcome so that we CAN get quality, high MP APS-C systems. I may someday switch to FF, I don't like losing the wide end like I do with APS-C, but that doesn't mean I can't desire the other. I would love to see great quality sensors that beat film in all aspects and have MP ratings all the way down to the resolving power of modern lenses.

You see, opinions and objectives can be stated in a pleasant and sane manner!

the more MP the better; why do you think Nikon pros are buying A900?

If the new Sony cell phones will have 12 MP, expect 2O MP APS-C in not too distant future

100 MP FF will come; it's just a matter of time;

Panasonic will do 24 MP on Micro 4/3 and Sony will do 100 MP on FF, no OVF, close distance between the lens element and the sensor

Future technology will be curved CMOS and adjustable magnification of lens elements, and 1000 MP model made in honor of Sonolta!

I don't see the point of ever increasing MP's really, how big do you print? myself I only have an A4 printer and at that size I couldn't see much if any difference between my 6MP KM5D and the 10MP A100 and both were producing a print as good or even better than any wet print I've done on the enlarger from 35mm negs. Ok if you want too, and can print at some huge size and have the very expensive printer/plotter for the job (or get it printed professionally) I guess, then the more MP's the better, but how many of us actually have really large expensive printers?

Instead of a pointless MP race I would like the camera manufacturers too engage in a DR race, or a low noise IQ race instead, but that would probably never fly in the minds of the consumer, (can't quite imagine the adverts proclaiming loudly "ONE STOP MORE DR!!) nope, they are convinced that ever more MP's sell more cameras so the camera co's are locked in the more MP groove it would seem.

Yep a new direction like that would be a great start....but hey let's not overdo it, I still love messing with flash, getting the odd flub and enjoying the successes here and there, flash is still mandatory out in the night chasing hard to photograph nocturnal critters, and is excellent for contolled directional lighting (3D effect) in soft-box product shots, isolating the subject (background slightly darker) if you want, equalizing WB with ceiling bounce and room lighting (less processing afterwards), freezing subject motion in poor light (nature photography mostly)...these are a few that spring to mind, and probably fall into a slightly more complex class of activity than a consumer type cam generally would, and even "with" a camera with great DR I think I'd still be playing with my flash guns as well...probably masochistic but there you go. 8)

There are "races" in alla parameters, MP is much easier to increase tho! And easy to visualize in marketing!

Have to agree with Don here.

If anyone is not happy with 24mp, then hey..get a MF or something! No doubt the next round will go up to 30mp..but the mp race has always been incremental, and never huge wow bang big difference. Some folks are easily swayed on a box number. Frankly I would be dead happy with a 16mp FF myself, hell even a 10mp FF would be great for most jobs.

I don't view the FF digital's as a different system, simply the high end of the same mount. Some of us have been using 35mm FF for ages (and still do), it's really no big deal working with FF, not if you are used to it.

Saying that, I don't object to more mp, so long as they don't stuff things up. If this new machine is 15mp (and it's pretty likely) Sony had better do a decent job, DR and high ISO wise, else they will find themselves the subject of ridicule from some users. I detect not a huge interest from 12mp A700 owners moving up to 15mp. I guess £1000 odd will be the order of the day, for the A800..maybe even a tad more. Making the A700 something of a bargain really

I agree with you here. If the a700 replacement (or the next camera to slot above it) is nothing more than a bump in megapixels, I won't really be interested. However, if nothing else changes on the a700's replacement than, say, lens micro adjustment, I'd be in line to buy one right now. Sony would do very well to revise and refine rather than lead the charge in megapixels. That said, if Sony were to make a 15MP FF, the competition would be astounded. Having among the largest pixel sites of any A-mount DSLR, the noise and ISO would be incredible, and I think it would be the new, if unofficial, flagship.

I seem to recall not so long ago that you were happy with 6mp and didn't want more. What happened?

Nothing happened!

6mp is plenty for most jobs I do, which tend to be high ISO anyway.
Being honest if I could get an A200 in 6mp, I would jump at it..but that won't happen.
For higher res stuff, I use film anyway.., good quality 35mm has always satisfied my printing needs, no doubt I will end up playing with larger formats, I have my 1930's MF, that I have not used. ;-)

I am pretty much neutral on high mp. I like the 12mp on the A700, even more with v4 firmware. If quality can be kept up then 20mp, 24p, 50mp, etc. is fine with me. Yeah, lenses are another issue though. I expect over time the tech will improve enough that it will happen. The raw file sizes keep going up, but the memory cards just keep getting cheaper $/gb and hard disks too so the big files are becoming less of a problem. I shoot cRAW so my A700 files are about 12.5mb. A few years ago when I was using a Minolta D7i, Canon DRebel/300D, or KM 7D I was using 128mb, 256mb, or 512mb CF cards so such big files were a no-go for me. These days I have 24gb of memory cards and I can buy a new 16gb CF card for $30-35. And a 1tb external hd can be bought for a $100. Last spring I spent almost a month traveling in Mexico with the A700 and 8gb of CF cards and I shot cRAW. I used up almost the 8gb and didn't have to reuse any cards.

So far, every digital camera I have bought had the option for selecting smaller sizes. I suppose a 50mp camera would probably have options for shooting several sizes too, maybe the smallest would be something like 6-10mp. I always shoot full-size though.
