I've finally had chance to try out my Tamron 200-400mm on some birds...

Well, I've finally moved into my new house and had a chance to take a picture or two this weekend. The new house has a small pond behind it, which helps attract a few interesting subjects, in this case a White-Faced Ibis with a group of American Avocets:

I meant to say the other day (I got involved with something else) that those are very good Hawk, love the laughing duck.

Hey, good one jcoffin, your avocets have a similar colour scheme too ours...now if I could just find one...you can never find an avocet when you need one.

Thanks! I guess I'm not surprised at the similarity in color schemes, though I've never seen any around the rest of the world -- I'm afraid I've never run into any Avocets when I was traveling. I have to agree, the happy duck was a cool shot -- though I have rather a fondness for the swan portrait as well.

Avocet's were mentioned in dispatches in the previous bird thread as well, Robbie has a great shot of one in Africa, http://www.photoclubalpha.com/forum/vie ... a&start=60, his has a different colour scheme tho, (pied), straight black and white.
Some great images in that thread, esp. Vulture's in flight from Kingfisher....and some real Kingfishers as well from both photographers.

Yes, now that you mention it, that was a great thread -- but with the difference in coloring, I hadn't picked up on the similarity between the birds (my pictures of birds may not be great, but I'm obviously a lot worse at identifying them...) Then again, the silhouette is similar enough that I probably should have picked up the similarity anyway. Thanks for the reminder.

If I might abuse Monty Python's great line, "And now for something completely different." In this case, rather than a man with three buttocks, we have a bird with three species. First, it's a pelican through the trees:



Then it's a Belted Kingfisher -- unfortunately, perched out on a island mid-stream, so the closest I can get is still quite a ways away:



and finally, it morphed into a Snowy Egret:



All in all, quite an interesting morning walk!
