Re: LCD robustness
One point, colour space choice on the A700/A900 - if you shoot aRGB, as I do, even in raw you will get a yellow-looking screen image. Shooting sRGB cures that problem. Also in sRGB the histogram will appear to be further over to the left, so if you use the histo to correct your exposure, you will give 1/3rd to 1/2 more exposure by previewing with in any sRGB mode. And better looking colour.

Well no problem here, it has been sitting on mine for maybe a year now. I only took it off once (just before that picture was taken, to measure the screen, which happen to be the exact same size as the screen on the HX1Sonolta wrote:
That's the same piece of cra* that fell off my A700 in less than two weeks...before it fell off I believe it was scratched by my shirt! Yeah...the plastic is some of the softest plastic on earth and we have typical Sony QC on the fit...cra*.
Honestly, that Sony protector is a 10 cent piece of plastic junk.
Guess what? I have used my KM5D for many years and the it's outer LCD screen is also made out of PLASTIC and it is NOT scratched. Not all plastic is the cra* Sony used for that junk they sell as an LCD protector.

So it gets the job done for me. Too bad it didnt work out for you.

Re: LCD robustness
Canons approach may be better. the problem is people don't realize it's there and they panic when they get a scratch or they put on one of those stick on protectors but when it comes time to take that off it pulls the TFT cover off and they then have to replace it anyway. They may be better quality, but people are still damaging them and having to replacing them. I can get the Sony ones in a store. For the canon ones I have to go to a Canon service centre.
PS. I always agree with Barry, you just can't let him off the hook or his head will get big

bakubo wrote:It sounds like what you are saying is that you agree with Barry. Canon puts good quality covers on their LCDs so you don't need a second, extra cost external one. Sony and Nikon put cheaper covers on their LCDs so you need to buy a second, extra cost external one. Even those second, extra cost external ones from Sony are not as good as just the plain old LCD cover on the Canons. Weird.

Re: LCD robustness
When water got into mine I think it got in through the screen. there was fog between the layers when I took it in for service.

After very close inspection of my a700 screen I do have tiny scratches and even some particulate between the screens. Not only is Sony using too much soft plastic...they are not sealing it all that well either.

Nobody has to agree with me!
I wish I could say the A200 screen didn't scratch or the protector didn't either. Sadly this is not the case.
The screen is also very poor in bright light.
Surely they could use the same materials that were on the 5d's screen, that is one tough screen.
Sony cheaped out on their materials

Re: LCD robustness
After using the D7D, D5D and A100 I didn't bother with the protector on my A700, and it was a mistake. My screen acquired scratches and a 'patina' in six months of relatively light use, I am not an abusive photographer. The A900 got a stick-on protector from the start, but almost certainly the wrong type, I feel the adhesive is far too powerful and the protector has scratched easily.
But this is not a problem unique to Sony, Leica had to update their rear screen to mineral glass after using a polycarbonate first generation. Nikon use mineral glass, Canon must use a better grade of plastic.

Yes, I know. I was just pointing out that Javelin seemed to basically be saying the same thing as you. Don't worry, you still are your own man.bfitzgerald wrote:Nobody has to agree with me!

Re: LCD robustness
My A700 was delivered back from Sony a few minutes ago. First thing I noticed when I unpacked is that they removed my LCD protector and did not return it.
As I said earlier, I removed everything from my A700 including the rubber eyepad, but intentionally left the LCD protector in place since I had read about someone getting their camera back from repair with a big scratch on the LCD. Pissed? Yeah.

Re: LCD robustness
Well, since we all know that the A700 has an inferior LCD cover and that an external LCD protector is really necessary I guess I won't be using my A700 until I can get a new LCD protector.
I'll call Sony and maybe they will even send me one, but that will probably be a week or more to Hawaii. I really doubt that I can find one locally.

Re: LCD robustness
More complaints about the lcd scratching.

Also down the posting..quote:
"I have had THREE Sony LCD protectors for my A350, and every single one has broke. There are two little clips on the side of the protector, and one of these will develop a little crack, eventually leading to it completely breaking. I gave up after my third one broke (I should note that the camera was in the bag 90% of the time I had it, and it was never dropped!!)"
Looks like I had better ebay a spare one just in case, when the sony one does break, I'll post it back to them and complain

Re: LCD robustness
Thanks for the link, Barry. That just confirms my decision not to use my A700 while I am waiting to get a new LCD protector. Tough because I have been without it for going on 3 weeks. I hope the protector arrives within the next week.

There is a new thread with some useful posts about the A700 LCD here:

Re: LCD robustness
I had never heard of an LCD cracking spontaneously. If there was some temperature extremes I wouldn't be too surprised, but the stories in that thread seem pretty strange.

Re: LCD robustness
In anticipation of the damaged A200 LCD cover failing, I went ahead and decided to try a 3rd party job from Hong Kong. Got it today, interestingly it fits better than the Sony official one does, tighter..no movement from left to right etc.
I think I will be avoiding official screen protectors from now on, might post that off to Sony and let them know how unhappy I am with it! Or I could leave it till it falls off, it will keep cracking at the bottom tab.
To me, not only is the LCD robustness a disappointment, but the protectors themselves are a let down as well.
