Waikiki in B&W and Color

I got my A700 back and for the last few days I have been able to use it again. Here are a few B&W shots from the last couple of days:

Thanks, Don. The very late afternoon light with the long shadows is cool. I sometimes like to walk around with my camera at that time of day. Some of the B&W shots also looked good with the very warm golden light, but I decided that they might be even better in B&W. Sometimes it is a tough choice.

Yes, that is what I used! I don't use this lens much, but every once in awhile I want to get a very different look so put it on the camera and walk around.

Nice shots, Henry. I noticed you never seem to have the ubiquitous "camera-at-your-eye" shadow in these shots. Are you shooting from the hip, so to speak? The overall look is very quick and candid.

I was wondering if anyone would notice my shadow in some of the shots. I wasn't even trying to hide it or keep it out of the frame. I decided all the shadows late in the day just made it all more interesting. Yes, I was shooting sort of from the hip. I had the camera around my neck with my finger on the shutter release. I had the lens set on MF for about 4-6 feet and used small apertures like f8 and f11. It was 11mm so I just generally pointed in the right direction and tripped the shutter.

Since I started using digital a few years ago all my DSLRs have been 3:2. I think all the digicams were 4:3 though. Isn't that normal for digicams? All of the photos in this thread are from DSLRs though. Anyway, why do you ask?

I like the colourful ones, esp for the beach pics, they transport more the feeling of joy and active life than the b&w ones

The shots have all been cropped into a taller format, not 4:3, but closer to that than to 3:2. If it were one picture I'd assume you were trimming out a distracting element, but most of the pictures on this page now are close to square and very consistently so.

Thanks. Some of the B&W ones were made very late in the day and the color version has nice golden light so it was tough to decide which way I liked them better. For example, in the first set of B&W #2, #3, and #4 were like that. I like B&W though so I do a lot of them. I like color too, of course! I just go with what I feel at the time. Sometimes later I go back and change my mind.

I don't care anything about what the original format is so I crop the way I like it the best.

Kevin, this is not directed at you, but I always thought the whole idea some people have about the original format being sacred as being absurd. If that is the case then which format is sacred? 3:2? If that is the case then 8x10 and 4x5 view cameras are all cropping. Same for 6x6 and 6x7 medium format. Also, 4:3 is cropping. Or, is one of those other formats the "correct" one and 3:2 is cropping? It is all so confusing! Best not to get caught up in someone else's "rules" about how to make a photo or how not to make a photo.

Oh, no offense intended, and none taken, or whatever. I just thought it curious that you had so many photographs in a non-standard but consistent format. Consistency is the key, of course, as too many varied and non-standard formats in one's portfolio can become distracting, IMO. I like your galleries though, you do excellent work. I actually would like the ability to shoot in multiple formats from one camera, though it doesn't make much difference with an optical viewfinder and uncropped RAW files.
