Trees of the American Southwest

Greg, thanks for resurrecting my old thread!

Your photos remind me a lot of far west Texas like around Guadalupe Mountains National Park. Thanks for posting. It appears like hidden in the background of the second photo I see a lake. Is that right?

Yes Henry that is a small lake, when they built the TV stations on top of Mt. Stuart they also put in a small dam not very far away for a constant water supply, it now has fish in it as well, I think people took fish up there and released them, it's the only way they could have got there because when it overfows duing the wet season the stream is full of steep rapids and a couple of high waterfalls...

Wow, beautiful Winston, really beautiful. Great colours, the silhouette, and the sun just coming up. How did you control the sun in the photograph? I always have problems with sunrises/sunsets of the sun itself burning out and flaring etc. Is it a timing thing?

I'm going to have another guessing game with a photo of Winston's, I've got to get something right sooner or later (no peeking at EXIF data).
Hmm I reckon what he did was AEL lock on a bright part of the sky and then compose the shot.
My other guess is that tree is a prickly Acacia...two guesses this time.

Raw file, no clipping in the histogram, and Lightroom PP.

I made sure there was no clipping in the raw file. Exposure adjustement made with rear wheel. It is some sort of Acacia.

Lonnie, is that on the Navajo Loop trail? The trees there are really cool.

Don, I almost never see wonderful fall colors like that. Generally, Texas and Hawaii don't get much. I used to spend lots of time in Vancouver, British Columbia and they get some pretty good colors in the fall though, but not really like yours. Also, Japan does too. Unfortunately, in the States I am rarely in the parts of the country that have the beautiful fall foliage.

Some trees just have character so I find myself shooting them sometimes even though I never go out with that intention.
