I'm surprised that no-one has yet stated a glaring fallacy in your initial premise: That you cannot afford a larger printer.

There are always those prints that we don't even trust ourselves to do - whether working with film or digital. What do we do? We head off to the Pro Lab and get a custom print done. For the rest we'll do them ourselves.

Also of note is the fact that printers don't last forever, and the next generation is always more feature rich and cheaper. Maybe your next printer will do 16 x 24 or even larger.

Hi all,
Once again thanks for the input. So, an update on what I've decided to do. But first just a bit about my R1. On many of the reviews of this camera it was said that the lens alone was worth the price, and for those that have used one I think you'll agree. Its a CZ zoom covering 24-120 and its beautifully made as well. So when I found out what it was worth as a trade in I nearly fell of the old chair laughing. Therefore I'm keeping my R1. I've decided to buy an A700 with the Sony 70-300G which will take over nicely where my CZ finishes. I'll have 2 cameras with lenses from 24 to 450mm. And, if later I decide to get a A850 then I can use the G lens.
By the way, with regards to printing, I wont be buying any new printers, as I am sick of doing the "Gillette" thing, and so are many of my friends. I love new gear like anybody else, and I dont mind paying out for a good quality lens etc as when you have it thats it. I think I've found a source where I can get A3 prints on Crystal archive paper done for a reasonable cost and if so, I'll be retiring my money hungry printer for good.

I played with a "new" A850 today. I did not notice that it was only 3 fps and a 98 percent viewfinder.

In comparing the look and feel with my A700 I am wondering whether this is the basic body that will be used with a APS-C pentaprism with pop-up flash on the forthcoming A730 (12 MP/5 fps) and A780 (14 MP/7 fps) cameras from Sony ?

I will repeat a warning that others have made that in buying into the FF models. You will have serious problems with controlling you lens lust. In the last couple of months since first picking up the A900 I have added a K M 17 - 35, a Minolta 80 - 200 HS ( something that I swore that like the more modern 70 - 200's that I didn't need) and today I bought a Minolta 100 SF.

I went from MD to the DSC-R1 and used it a lot. Impressed by results but disliked OVF and slow RAW shooting and small buffer. Bought A700 with CZ16-80. The lens was the main reason I went for Sony DSLR as opposed to CAN or NIK. Still keeping the R1 but mostly as a souvenier as cannot see me preferring it over my A700 or A350 now.
