14 MP on FF isn't enough when Sony already gives you 24 for a mere $2k. If you want higher ISO and higher FPS, you leave the domain of the ordinary shooter and get onto the niche markets - not a good reason to bring out a camera unless it's just to show off.

If you're only giving me a "normal" camera at 14MP, I want it to be $1000, and that blows your market for the higher end cameras. To engineer in all the bells an whistles you want in a specialized 14MP FF model, you'll have to sell it for $1900 or more, and what would everybody think then? Sony's not in the niche market yet.

Now, take the current 550, put it in a 700 body re-vamped for the LV, and keep all the 700's controls, then you have a nice little $1400 750. Sure, Barry won't buy it at that price, :P but people looking to upgrade their 700s will.

You just can't set the mark too low, MP wise on FF these days, and still have room in the market space to make profit. Face it, the days of the 6MP DSLRs are done, no matter what you think of your 5D. There are no new 8 MP DSLRs, and with cell phones breaking the 12MP barrier (quality isn't there, but it's a marketing point) how long will it be before 12 MP is the floor for APS-C?

No doubt that in a few years we'll see super high ISO sensors, but as a steady progression of sensor evolution. Sports guys will pay extra for high FPS cameras, but as Don the Bi-Polar always pointed out, Sony's not in that market. (at least not yet). Right now, some 14 month afte I got my 350, it's replacement (550) offers me real improvements for just about $100 more. I can't complain too much about that.

Nikon seem to think 12mp is working for FF, maybe they know something we don't??

I don't have a problem with the concept of a less than 24mp FF DSLR, 16mp sounds ok to me..

24mp is overkill for most folks

Okay forget it... heres my hope...
14mp
2-3 F-stops better noise control
DXO Optics Built in and in software
Full Frame
7fps
Burst of 36 shots before buffer fills (think of the film days... I'd say thats fair since DSLR's cost waaay more than there film counterparts of old)
30+ AF Sensor points that fill the frame!
Optical Viewfinder
Live View (only to attract more buyers to preserve Sony's reason to be in the DSLR business)
VIDEO (Which I doubt but would be a new yet shocking feature especially if its on par or better than that damn Canon 7D)
WIFI or a VERY low cost option built into the system

I doubt I'll get any of it but it would make for a killer DSLR!

Nikon's 12 MP FF body goes for $2700. Since Sony's top-of-the-line 900 goes the same price and has twice the MP, how would Sony put 12MP FF into it's line-up? You can't sell it for less than the price of the 550, ($950) and unless you put it in a junk body, you can't include it in the FF lineup at a price that doesn't knock on the 850's door.

A 16 or 18 MP FF at $1600 - $1700 still gives Sony room to bring out a a750 at $1200 - $1400, so that may be the way they have to go.

As for 24MP being overkill, well, they're not your average enthusiast's cameras. You have to either REALLY like good images or plan to submit for publication somewhere. Arizona Highways magazine wants either 4x5 slides or 19.5MP digital pics. That means 24 is right in the ball-park with a little cropping.

12mp is enough (or even too much) for most enthousiasts. Professionals and those who really nead to print large at hight dpi (or afficionados of extreme cropping) need 24 mp or more. For the rest (and that includes me) 12 mp is more than enough.

Thing is the D3s is a pro level camera, it's just landscape shooters aside..well I can see that being more than enough for some pros as well, they seemed to wing it by with even 3mp at one time!

These lower mp FF bodies are high ISO demons, and they are getting pro use as well. Let's face it...you'll come nowhere running out of steam making low light wedding shots from a D3, or tabloid spread as well.

Not everyone is a fine art shooter..even then..the objective is not always "massive" sized prints, seen too many smaller (A4 ish), very nice landscape shots to be convinced you need 24mp for that work. Even A3 is no problem at all for 35mm and you can push it harder..who prints at A1? Not me...that's for sure

Almost all my shooting this year has been at ISO 800 or less with perhaps about a hundred at 1600 so why a limited MP FF for me ?

Looking at some prices from establishment dealers rather than gray imports from Hong Kong

Pre-order Nikon D3s AUD 6550
Nikon D3 AUD 6550
Nikon D700 AUD 3620

Sony A900 AUD 3699
Sony A850 AUD 2870

So unless you are one of the limited few who actually need 3200 or 6400 to make a living then LESS IS MORE. And this is from someone who actually likes the D700 body. And the Nikon D3x is now a steal at just AUD 10,550.

Well thanks to Picasa face detection I was playing with I realized I can get some very nice candid type portraits of some people in some of the scenes I shot just by cropping out the faces. but in a lot of cases 12mp isn;t enough because a lot of them wind up being 100% but I got 3 or 4 from one thing we were at this year where they weren't too far from me but it would have been nice to be able to print some of the other ones I have but the detail isn't there to be had in such small crops

All I can predict is a high frame rate camera (APS/full frame) because we have a soccer world cup ahead and Sony is official sponsor. They won't loose this opportunity unless they are stupid. By the way, Sony showed a long telephoto, probably for sports shooters, FIFA world cup is the best place to launch it.

Of course they need to work on high ISO noise, SSS can't stop motion blur.

I doubt A750 or whatever they call it would be a mirror-less camera, not suitable with longer lenses. May be mirrorless is for next A330 replacement.

At least If I were Sony, I'd have done this. May be they are too smart :)

Thanks

Since Sony uses Canon shooters to cover its own Twilight Football events, would they be all that worried about Alphas at World Cup matches?

I have to say, if I was Sony, I would only hire PR photographers who actually used the product. I know that Paul Genge has provided one of the UK's best press/PR shooters - who has used Minolta for years, and been featured in Photoworld in the past - with an 850 in return for future services.

I didn't get the rationale behind this twilight football event, Sony neither has a single sports cam or any high ISO champ. Why did they waste that money is beyond me. If they don't use FIFA World Cup opportunity to launch a sports lens, cam I'd assume they are not serious about DSLRs.

It's much more than that. It's not just having DSLR to be a sponsor of something and vice versa. In this case, video is more important for Sony, even TVs. Much much more. For us, alpha shooters, we wish/dream to have new things with the events of football/soccer, but I'm afraid it's not so. :(
