Over the last 24 years I have travelled around a lot in Japan, besides the times I lived in Tokyo. Tokyo is a good place for street photography, as any very large city usually is.
Good news! I'm going to save my viewing for the weekend. Get home and crank up the PS3 and big HD TV, sit back, and enjoy travels in Japan from the comfort of our sitting room.

I just realized that probably most people not in the U.S. would have no idea what my tongue-in-cheek caption of the earlier photo meant. Paris Hilton is a famous woman here in the States. She is famous just for being famous and very rich.
Great pictures from Japan. I lived there for seven years when I was a kid (Air Force Brat) and the pictures bring back good memories. I remember squid on a stick and great corn on the cob roasted on charcoal that was still in the shape of the sticks it was made from. And the waterfall pictures remind me of Lake Towada, one of my favorite places in Japan.

Cool! I wonder how they will look on HDTV. Please let us know. What is the screen resolution for HD TV?

Mike, which AF base were you at in Japan? I have lived in Tokyo several times and also have travelled all over Japan during the past 24 years. The waterfall pictures were on a hike in Gifu-ken -- unfortunately I have forgotten the name of the place. There were a series of 7 or 8 waterfalls as we went up the mountain.

We were at Misawa from 66-69 and again from 72-75. I started the first grade there and finished the 10th. The first time there, the exchange rate was 360 Yen to the dollar and 500 Yen was a day's wages. One of the coolest things about being there was that English Class was mandatory, so everywhere you went kids liked to practice. Although they didn't necessarily speak English, since they had very few chances to practice, they could all write English. I learned to carry a pad and pencil everywhere.
My dad had a totally manual Pentax camera and took lots of slides, terrible color balance. Someday I hope to scan and see what if anything I can do with them. I'm waiting for the price to come down a bit, still $5K for a decent one.
By the way, I have processed all the photos on my website for the last few years just using notebook computers since we travel so much. Uncalibrated notebook computers and not even expensive ones. At the moment I am using a 17" HP I bought last year. I used to have a desktop PC and calibrated monitor, but not these days. From time to time if I see an Apple Store I drop in and check out my website on one of their high end systems and I have always been pleasantly surprised to see that the photos generally look pretty good. Of course, if I had my notebook PC sitting next to it I would probably notice some differences.
Anyway, the point of this post is that I would like feedback from people. I know that David, for example, uses a good system and keeps it well calibrated. I have not viewed any of these latest Japan photos on anything other than my notebook. If anyone sees anything that looks really out of whack then please tell me.

Yes, I think it does. Some geta have 2 platforms about 1/3 from each end of the shoe, but some just have one in the middle, like his have. I was standing on the other platform, not so many people around, and starting hearing the distinctive clack of geta. I turned and saw this guy walking along.
Hi Henry, I went through the two albums last night - superb! The colour etc. was fine through my PS3 on to the HD television. All of the pictures are great, but it is the pictures of people that really stand out for me, both candid and posed. You always seem to get a great connection with the people you photograph. It seems that people in Japan are generally happy to have their picture taken? I was also amused to see the universal 2 fingered V sign in salute from most young people you photographed. The autumn colours are also amazing and I suspect would even rival New England.
