Just to keep the thread going, here is a woodland picture from today. It was a cold dreary day and I found this pond which has been recently set up by the mangers of the nature reserve I was visiting. No real evidence of spring beyond budding trees, and the wood was still quite dreary. The pond put me in mind of Grendel's mere from Beowulf, but I had been wondering alone in the woods for several hours .

You should earmark that spot Birma, and go back in a couple of months and take another shot, just to see what difference there is, the trees might be nice and green, the sun might be out, the birds chirping, flowers here and there, ducks on the pond...

It is a good spot and I will certainly be going back. As you say, I already have images of dragon-flies, birds, bull rushes, etc.

I played with the 135 all last weekend. I am really pleased with it. A bit long on APS-C , and of course there are times when AF would be great, but for the money it is great. I'll pop another picture in the "reading" thread. Sun is out at the moment so may get some more outdoor shots later. That MF 85mm that I keep seeing on eBay (Samyang?) is certainly more interesting now. I would like something in the 50-90 range 1.4-2.8, for small-money, so I will continue to keep an eye on eBay - perhaps I will have to look at the M42 types.

More wintery trees. Locally this hill is known as "the Tump". It is a quite a landmark for motorway travellers (the motorway was behind me as I took the picture, M5 J7). According to the historians it was a boundary marker between tribes in anceint times. The tree on the top was supposed to be used to hang people in "olden days", but it is propbably far too young for that and just a local legend.

It was a very dull day and the IR shots I tried were compromised, I think, by my attempt to up the ISO (see the IR Filters thread). I hope for more sun soon and I will go back and try again . Not wishing to de-rail this thread, but what is you approach in PPing IR shots? (Perhaps we need to take this discussion to the IR threads?)

It was foggy yesterday, so I went out with the Sigma 10-20 on my a200. I have several shots, none of them exactly what I wanted, but this is my favorite. Lemme know what you think. John

That spot is very prolific with such odd-looking trees. Should yield a completely different mood and colours for many different weather conditions and time of day.

I like how the paved trail curls away between the tilted trees while the fog adds a sense of spookiness. B&W lworks just fine for this composition.

Birma I had to think about that tree and hill shot, I like the hill and the silhouetted branches/fine detail, but honestly the lower half is too scruffy for mine, to be a great shot, but interesting just the same, I think I see a badger hole in the middle left, (but what do I know about badgers). Now that you've described the local legend about the hanging tree (one of the interesting parts), I wouldn't mind seeing a shot or the hill itself from further back (and a couple of trees somewhere in the view of course, if possible).

Hi Greg - I agree - I have been thinking that there is too much distraction in the shot , and it doesn't tell the story of the trees. Wrong lens, and could be from a better position. As this is less than a mile from my house I will have more opportunities to improve. I hate lens changing while out "in the field", but perhaps I should just carry to bodies, one with a wide angle and one with a telephoto.

I'm interested in hills over there, there was a TV program (went on for quite a while), they did excavations on different sites, uncovering periods of early history (fascinating stuff), Roman this, Norman that, and even earlier periods, encient castles that had been pulled down (after being overthrown etc. and the stones used in other latter buildings), and all that was left in most cases was parts of the floor....and the resident experts mulled over the various pieces of pottery, metallic objects, dating the period and what had transpired there at the time, and since...but what I liked was the huge hills that some tribes had constructed, hand made, and erected wooden forts on the top of..an incredible feat for the time, when you consider that medieval subsistance farming consists of largly just surviving, never mind diverting large amounts of time and resources to building forts...but that's our ancestry..thus my interest in large mounds/hills.

I'm sorta thinking the same about taking two cameras...but a bit hard if I go for a ride on the bike, then I just make do with the KM5D and the KM24-105, nice little outfit, but on occasion 24mm can be not quite wide enough if space is constricted, (rare), but so far no biggie as I can easily zoom with my feet if space allows.
