sigma 18-125 hsm any users

Unread post by gio67 »

i,m thinking of buying this lens as a walkround lens on holiday, i have the 16-80 carl zeiss but would like the extra reach and also take a 2x convertor with me,
i have read the previous thread on this but it was only up until nov 2009 and not really definitive,
if anybody has this lens and can give me any pros and cons, it will be much appreciated

Hi,

Do you have your mind set on a single lens solution? With a lens as good as the CZ16-80 I'd be looking at something in addition to cover the longer end, maybe the Tamron 70-300 LD Di which is cheap AND good.

Attaching a 2x TC to the Sigma would also likely mean losing autofocus at some point as you zoom in.

i have a tamron 18-200 and 70-300 i just wanted to take one lens and felt the 16-80 was just a bit short on reach, maybe i'll have a rethink

I use the CZ16-80 most of the time but also feel occasionally that the long end is too short.
I read somewhere that the new Tokina 16.5-135mm may also be produced with the Alpha mount and I am waiting to see if that materialises before I invest in a new lens. I tried the Tamron 18-250, which is good, but I do a lot of W/A and 18mm at the short end often is not enough for me. The CZ at 16mm (24mm equivalent) is the minimum for width on a standard lens and I will probably just about be able to live with 16.5mm on the Tokina if IQ is up to scratch. As I see it there really is nothing of any quality to replace the CZ at present providing a wide enough setting for my requirements. I do not know enough about the Alpha 16-105 and it is not all that fast.
