Fogo Island - Testing New Lenses

I added two lenses to my arsenal this week and got a chance last night to try them out. The first image was captured with a 25 year old Minolta Maxxum 50mm f/1.7 prime lens, and the second with the newest "kit lens", the Sony 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6

I left it awfully late, (35-40 minutes after the sun went down) and it was quite dark, but I wanted to see if I could salvage anything with the fast Minolta lens, and was surprised that not only did this old tank of a lens do very well in such poor light, but interestingly, so did the new Sony lens.

You will recall this same old sailing schooner's wheel (that sits at the shoreline of our home in the tiny community Island Harbour, NL) from past postings on this forum. It is believed to be well over 100 years old, and really is a shame that it's still sitting out in the elements like that, (rather than in a museum somewhere) but it makes for a great focal point, I think.

Both images were taken hand-held, with my Sony Alpha.

Hi Camperbc,

That's an impressive kit at the bottom of your message.

I agree that the sharpness in the amount of available light is very good. The wheel itself is a good photography object.
Lovely sunset and wheel silhouette in the second one as well.

The lenses you tested at low light conditions performed nicely as it appears.
By the way, Fogo Island is a lovely place to be up and around.

I like the pic. the wheel interests me because it's cast and from a time when casting parts like this meant that casting technique had progressed to mass manufacture instead of new technology. if you examine the inconspicuous parts of the wheel you may find a makers mark and a a casting mark. this should ID the manufacturer and set a timeline for the wheel.

imho, you could've left the B&W even on the wheel.
The second is my preferred one.

I like the second one best. It's conveying the mood so beautifully. First one has too much of a oof background
distracting my viewing.

Great shots as always Glen, I like the simplicity and form in the first, and the great sunset in the second - wonderful colours.

I like the sunset/view myself, but you sortof need the first image to fully understand the wheel, without that image one would be left wondering about the mysterious wheel in the second shot. Looks very calm, almost like a lake rather than the ocean..nice view.
