Saving a Pelican

In San Francisco Bay. A pelican with fishing line hooked between its gullet, wing and body.
We had to entice the bird with bread and use a net used for fish to get the bird out of water,
snip off the lines and let the bird get back in. Taken with A900 + Min. 28-135.

That's a nice help to the poor pelican. Certainly a relief to see it in peace in the water in the last shot. I'ms ure you've actually prolongend its life.

Sweet creatures suffer a lot because of the humankind. This one was lucky to have you and friends around.

That's good work, with some well taken explanatory photos as well. I've heard of similar things happening here with pelicans, they can easily grow accustomed to close contact with humans, much to their peril.

You are so right about they getting accustomed to humans. These are wild ones and in state of California
it is illegal to even touch them. Within the letter of law we were not supposed to do what was done. The
spirit of the law is to save the wildlife so we went with the spirit of law. In fact the response was so spontaneous, (fishing all forgotten) we came around to discussing the legal aspects only after the fact.

Great work! Glad you could save the poor pelican.

Thank you. We could not catch any fish that day but caught this one.
With our friends and our children, a nice day on Bay, with some cold ones,
the satisfaction of doing a good deed have more than amply compensated for
not catching any big ones.
