My thoughts exactly. All current Sony series up to and including a5x0 should better be replaced with large-sensor compacts.
After all, the a550 is just a P&S DSLR, and it's quite good at that when used on green auto in LV. So Nex just trims the unnecessary bulk while looking sexier to consumer.

If they later make a Nex in the class of a700, the thing would still have to be bulky, only about an inch thinner than the current design while keeping all other dimensions.
Well Sony will have too expand the e-mount lens range for that to transpire I think, at present there is only two fully functional lenses (a third soon), all the A-mount lenses can fit yes, but with the inconvenience of no AF, I seriously doubt that people who have invested a lot of money in A-mount lenses are going to abandon their fully functional A550's A700's (and future upgrade models) and lens collection just to use a more portable camera exclusively. (and less functionality in some areas, no OVF for example).

People seem to be forgetting that you'll never have an ILC with the depth of system/lenses as an SLR system. I don't see the Rebels as the last hold out..I think the chances of Canon dumping their lens mount is 0 unless they want to wipe themselves out.

Now if makers put EVF's in instead of OVF's is a separate issue on it's own..that does not wipe the mount out. I don't see that happening for some time, nor do I want it either. Sony can't really dump A mount either you'll have too many angry customers who would never touch a NEX in a million years.
ILC's don't replace DSLR's..not even near it. They do bring something newer to the market and a half way point for some. I think we need to stop thinking ILC = DSLR of the future the two can co-exist together. ILC is the new high end compact camera and that's not a bad thing as we've been stuck with pin head sensors for these types of cameras for far too long.

Sure. That's why I think there's not much sense of making a Nex7 as an a700 substitute. If they ever make a Nex7, that would be just a top-level e-mount Nex.
And the a700 successor has already been pre-announced as an A-mount cam. And there's every sense for Sony to make it real.

So I think Walt's worries are a bit overblown. But **it happens, you know.

P.S. Pronouncing 'exactly' as [ig-zakt-li] is rather good English, to the contrary from [ek-zek-tli]...

Yes the dictionary I consulted (Encarta) confirms you are correct, the Encarta dictionary may be American based in phonetic interpretation, I'm fairly sure when I went to school EX was pronounced as EX, not IG. Here http://www.forvo.com/word/exactly#en the word is spoken by a male in the UK and also a female in the US.

You may consult Webster's, they distinguish US/UK versions if there is any; and it's still the same igzaktli. But really, there's hardly any strict norm in English - such is the nature of the tongue. (But you may always follow the Queen's version.)
As to the US English, I should say that it's not exactly English per se. If you analyse the word order in the colloquial US speech variants, it would appear to rather follow some Central-European patterns than whatever British there exists. In fact, the Oz/Nz are more English, being developed among native speakers, primarily. And it's far from that with the US English.

I did find some earlier ones (dictionary references) that appeared to display the phonetic for exactly, exactly like it's spelt, one from 1510 or such and another from in the 1600's....but anyway I'm bored now....you win. :)
Greg

ps. Seeing as how I'm a nonconformist, I will still refuse to pronounce EX as IG...

pps. Danjojo, the USMC came to Townsville a few years back, for the first time that I can remember...probably more than a few years actually, come to think of it...photo herehttp://www.photoclubalpha.com/forum/pos ... =post&f=21

I don't know what happened to the first one so I did it again.http://www.photoclubalpha.com/forum/vie ... =21&t=4214

Greg, no photo shows up for me, are you sure it uploaded correctly?

I wouldn't be surprised if it was the first time, it was a lot different from when we went to Sydney and there were tons of people waiving to us and waiting for us to get off the ships.

If there is an old news article it will mention the Sailors and Marines attached to the U.S.S. Boxer, U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard, etc.

Not that I would necessarily trust the information but it is interesting that Sonyalpharumors had a posting 15 June with heading
(SR5) The two pellix cameras will record in AVCHD, have an electronic viewfinder,…
and relevant text
Finally we have some more reliable infos about the Pellix cameras:
1) The Pellix camera will come with an electornic viewfinder (yes like it is shown on the Sony patent)
2) If you want you will be able to move-up the pellix mirror to avoid the light-loss (but phase detection will not work)
3) At least one camera will record in AVCHD (We don’t know if the A33 will record in AVCHD or Mpeg only)
4) The A55 has a 16 Megapixel sensor and the A33 a 14 Megapixel sensor

So maybe the two prototypes repeatedly shown are the A33 and A55 and the A55 could then be the A700 successor or it may be something entirely different. With the uprating of VIDEO by Sony I would not put it past them to switch to EVF. If they have refined the technology I invite them to release an EVF attachment for the NEX5. Thanks in advance.

All we know about the a7xx is it has a decal on it that says it's video, and it has less control buttons, neither of which are reassuring for still photography at a high level. A decal is not a camera, we have no idea what the a7xx will be. Assuming it will even be as good as the a700 in core DSLR still photography functionality has no basis in fact. And we certainly have seen Sony taking a meat axe to DSLR core features. We will see when they put out the a7xx, hidden behind all their P&S in their publicity. Maybe it will be advertised as "almost as good as the NEX"

I'm not getting my hopes up only to have them dashed.

the Model numbring indicates to me (if the rumour is correct. A33, A55 et al) that they may branch the video capable cameras away for the DSLR's. we already see new entry A290 A390 cameras with no video. and we know Sony is not opposed to having lots of models in their line. this would be the best of both worlds. at least in the short term

It's only the best of both worlds if the cameras have what you are looking for does not matter if it's EVF or OVF..bar solving the MLU issue ;-)

I'd be a tad cautious on the new A7xx unless the design will change I am not sure the style is to my tastes (looks like a Canon mixed with something else) As Walt say the mock up did indeed have less buttons (ISO missing?) and Sony seemed to cave in on the top lcd as well which was really a non issue for most folks (don't care either way but if they do a top LCD do it properly not A900 style)

I expect the A5xx range to get video added and probably address none of the issues raised..so that leaves me in exactly the same situation..best part of a grand to get the basic bits I would like. IMO A mount needs a radical over haul less models and a range more in tune with users needs.

There was an article in yesterday's Honolulu Star Advertiser newspaper about Rimpac 2010 and it mentioned the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard along with a photo:

Thanks for the articles, it stirs up a lot of memories since the Bonhomme Richard is a twin ship to the Boxer which I was attached to back then. Should visit the ship yard here in San Diego soon and get some photos. Hopefully, down the road with the kids a little older and in daycare, I'll make enough freelance to get a website or two up and running.

Most interested in having one to display street photography with the aNEX cameras, shooting San Diego, L.A., Bakersfield, Las Vegas, etc.

The name Boxer rings a bell, I'm sure that one has been here, and maybe the other one as well at a different time, but I think if it was it was parked in the Harbour not practising with the LC's.
I re-did the photos and message....don't know what happened too the other one.

you did good catching them for photos, you wouldn't think they are as expensive as they are since they look like some crazy contraption from an apocalyptic movie.
