Fogo Island Longliner

Unread post by camperbc »

This is my neighbor's old longliner that is tied up directly in front of my house. He just put it back in the water last week for the first time in two years. Last year, just as Ron was about to launch it, he took a bad fall down the embankment and suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis, so was out of commission for the whole summer. He has finally healed, and promises to take my daughter Jacqueline and I out on the water regularly. Hopefully we can soon get some good up-close captures of the whales and icebergs! You may recall my humpback whale pics from two summers ago, when the boat was completely surrounded by dozens of them!

These images were taken with my Sony Alpha, and old Minolta 50mm f/1.7 lens. It was too dark at the time for my kit lens, but the vintage Minolta lens made it look like daytime!

Today my new Lowepro Flipside 400 backpack arrived in the mail, so I am ready to again hit the trails, this time in comfort. No more carrying a large and cumbersome suitcase-style camera case!

Jacqueline is now finished school for the summer, her leg is healing nicely, and we should be hiking the Lion's Den trail later this week.

Lovely series, Camperbc.

Each has its own charm but I like the perspective in the first photo...

Thanks for sharing,

Exactly where, Glen? I have only seen 2 on your site. I would be very glad if you link them here.
And nice shots as always. :D

Hi Dr. Harout,
Glad you like them, thanks!
My apologies; the whale shots were not posted on this particular forum, as I was not yet a member. When I get a spare moment I will post a few on here. They aren't great images by any means, (the day was very dull and hazy) but nonetheless a wonderful experience being amongst a large pod of humpbacks. I am still kicking myself for not thinking to bring along my video camera that day. Perhaps we will get lucky again this summer and end up in the middle of another pod!
Glen

PS: I will also try to post some of my daughter Jacqueline's work on here soon.

Instead, why not persuade her to become a member here?

Dr. Harout, we assumed that there is a minimum age requirement to register here, as was the case at DPReview's Sony Talk Forum, when she wanted to join there, but couldn't because she is under the age of 18. I am looking into it now, and have PM'ed David to see what he has to say about it. I believe that if a young person has a serious interest in photography, it should not matter how old they are, as long as they act in a responsible manner on the forum. In fact I think we should be encouraging young people.
Thanks,
Glen

I have never heard of an age requirement here, but David can say if there is. As you say, I don't see anything wrong with it. By the way, acting in a responsible manner on a forum is clearly not a function of age. :)

There are special regulations - if your site is hosted in the US - for having children under 13 sign up. I had to go over them with a customer once who was setting up a website for their cell phone users. Since they were targeting 'tweens' usually 9-15 year olds, they fell into that trap.

That's all due to the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA). If they're older tan 13, you have no worries, unless you have materials deemed "not appropriate for minors".

Very nice scenes, I like the first one especially. The waters always seem tranquil there when the ocean is so close, must be the enclosed nature of the anchorage perhaps.
Greg

ps. I had a look for a map of Fogo Is. but couldn't find one with much detail, at least I now know 'where' it is, it's no wonder there is the odd iceberg floating by with Greenland not far away to the North. One thing I learnt very soon after messing around in boats was, if it's remotely possible for somthing to fowl up, the sea will find it sooner or later, usually at the worst possible moment.

Greg, we are fortunate to live in a protected bay, with a large island in front, so the waves never get very big on our shore; that's why you often see such calm seas in many of my shots. But just to the right or our property there is almost always a big surf, as the wind and waves are able to come in from the north unhindered, and crash onto the point of land that marks the start of our bay. We often see waves 3 stories high from our upstairs windows. We love falling asleep to the pleasing sound of the surf, and for this reason like to keep the bedroom windows open, even in the cooler weather! Change Islands is 4 miles directly out from our place (you can see it on the horizon in many of my shots) and yet the waves are so large that we can clearly see them hitting the rocks, even from that great distance.

Many people have died in this region from boating mishaps in the 3 years we have been here. Below are two images taken a few months ago, (just meters from our home) showing just how rough things can quickly get. In fact, on the day these pictures were taken, two local bird hunters died when their boat capsized near our home. The turbulent North Atlantic is very unpredictable, and the weather can turn in a heartbeat. The sea commands a lot of respect, that's for sure. Sometimes hard to believe, when you see some of my images of an ocean that is as calm as glass!

Thanks to all of you who were kind enough to comment on my longliner images; much appreciated.

Glen

Ah, now those seascapes restore my mental equilibrium about the proximity Fogo Is. has to the North Atlantic Ocean.
One thing that is easy for me too forget is the temperature of the water, here if your boat capsizes or sinks and you end up in the water the main thing you would worry about first is, being eaten by a shark. Over there you would have hypothermia, I guess unless you had something like an insulated wetsuit on you would be in serious trouble within a short time. There was a series on TV here about the crab fishermen in the Bering sea, how icy the water was, and how dangerous the whole escapade was...fascinating show.
Greg

ps. Birdhunters..what sort of birds do they hunt?

All excellent images Glen. I really like the last two
showing you do get some seas. What nice colour it is.
