Water Shots

Unread post by ACIPhotos »

Hi everyone. Not being fab as you are at landscapes I have taken some water shots of the River Dart that I would like to share with you. Any feedback you have would be great as I am always striving to learn. Plus any water shots you have would be great to see too. :)

Hi Anna, interesting shots. I really like the colours relfected in #1 and the sense of movement in #2. Just imho of course, but in both the 'action' is a bit central in the frame - you could try compsoing the shots with the main subject off centre (or on a 'third'?)
Nex 5, Nex 6 (IR), A7M2, A99 and a bunch of lenses.

Hi Anna,

#1 just does nothing for me. Maybe it's just too monotonous with all the green, but hey, that's just me.

#2 could stand a bit of stepping/zooming back to show just a bit more context. I do like the smooth flow effect of the water.

I don't mind artsy water shots, the content/composure is maybe a little obscure, but the 'keep em guessing' value is quite good I think.

Ah Yes! That rule of thirds. Bit difficult with a ripple - only because I found it hard enough to get in shot in the first place without missing an edge off. Still that's what I have to practice I guess.

It's my green phase obviously! Looking back at the last few weeks I've been going through a green phase. I'll snap out of it! Thanks for the view of the other one; as it is a spot I return to every now and then, I'll try it.

Rules are there to be broken sometimes. If we all did thirds and what the books tell us we'd all get the same view I suppose. Not that I'm trying to be obscure???.....I just take what I see and like the look of. I always was a bit quirky!
And not having had any feedback on my stuff it's hard to know where you are going wrong sometimes. :?

I didn't mention the rule of thirds actually, I don't think you need to bother too much about rule of thirds in artistic type shots.
The rule of thirds is a crock when it's use is obvious I think, I often see people using it as a matter of underlying principal no matter what, to the point of it being gratuitous...it's as if to say, look I complied with the rule and shoved the important bit over too one side and left a bunch of empty space or uninteresting stuff in the middle and now it's a proper photo.
By 'obscure' I meant those photos are more art than informative pictures, (mainly the first one), as we the audience weren't there too see the surroundings, we can only see the portion you photographed. For example, at first glance the green and blue one with the dimple is not self explanatory at all, I looked at it for some time trying to figure out what it was and what it was supposed too represent and how and where from the green and blue came too be in the photo etc. I came to the conclusion it was either moss on the bottom of the waterway or a combination of that and the reflection of trees and sky above it....so in the end I sort of 'got it'.
The other one is obvious as to what it is, so it's less abstract and more informative so I guess it's fine for an example of how to do slow shutter of moving water to give that flowing effect and still render a decent exposure, but like others have mentioned, a little more of the surrounding scenery as well might enhance the picture and give the viewer more context....depends on what else comes into view I guess.

Winston,
Those shades of green are dramatic, just dramatic. Thank you for sharing.

Hi I get what you mean thanks. Maybe on the second one I should have repositioned myself - although I would have been in the river to do that! I don't think that there was much else to view at that point in which case maybe it wasnt worth the shot. When you are learning this happens often I think. Good job it is digital !! In terms of the first one - do you need to know "what " it is? I tend to just look at it as a mass of colour that nature produced.

Winston - lovely shot. Really my kinda thing. Crystal clear water - looks just like you could go and stand in it on a hot day. I've attached one of mine I did - not as good as that maybe but it has got that clear water in the foreground. Hope you like it.

Thanks Sury.

Nice image, ACIP. Where is that?

Henry, have you worked much on #2? I like that one a lot.

Wonderful, Winston.
If that was around or near where I was, I would make sure I got in there! Beautiful....

Anna, that's a beautiful scene; must be even more impressive in real ! : )

Henry, I 'believe' those shots were taken around the same time in the same area because I see some similar elements. The water splashes frozen inthe first and the translucent blue water curling in the foreground in the second shot is amazing. The second must be even more impressive in a larger size.
