Venice - Summer Carnival!?

Three images from a workshop in Venice a few weeks ago.

This type of photography was way outside of my comfort zone. It was a steep learning curve but great fun and I gained a great deal from taking part. I'm still going through the images but these are three I particularly like.

For once a was not the only Sony user a fellow participant had an A850 and A700

All my images were shot with A700 16_80mmcz

Congratulations!

I like the lighting and the costumes and the compositionns of the first and the second photos. The third photo could expose more of the sculpture on the right while the dramatic pose of the model is not bad.

Hi Ossie - the first two are stunning - not so sure about the third one. Must have been a great experience, and what a wonderful place for a photo course .

Venice is a great venue/location and we have photographed the (real) carnival a couple of times in the past - it no longer happens properly, but on return visits, there has often been an element of it around. Venice is, for me, much softer and more antique than this and I think some of our best shots were those on 3M 640, GAF 500 and similar ultra-fast grainy films of the 80s. They had a soft antique look especially when used slightly out of date and put through Treviso's X-ray machines...

Technically very good Keith. I would say it could be worth experimenting with PP to add vignetting, softening, muting of colour and maybe even grain to make the results more 'painterly' in feel.

Birma. Thank you also. Venice is a wonderful place for photography. I have been lucky in being able to attend two workshops in Venice. It is a great place and I hope to return but perhaps next time just for the usual tourist activities.

David. Thank you for your feedback and observations. I will experiment with your suggestions. I agree that giving the impression of a painting will add something to the images

I like all of them, especially the 3rd one (there is no accounting for taste uh!! ).
I was wondering if the robe on the third one could get some texture. That workshop
must have been an thoroughly enjoyable experience, what with Venetian fascination for masks.

Sury and Dr Harout. Thank you for viewing. It was a very successful and worth while if a very intense week. My head hurt by the end of it and I was not alone in that. It has certainly whetted my appetite to do more of this type of photography. I feel another trip to Venice coming on.

I have tried out a few ideas along the lines suggested by DK. What do you think?

I have a series of images from a previous workshop in Venice that I have given a similar treatment. To me they never look their best when viewed on a screen but they seem to come alive when printed on a quality textured paper
