The first one is fantastic. I am one of those Indians who does not like
(the game of) cricket. Looking at your image I told my wife how I love the
cricket, she almost fell off the chair in shock. Thank you for that lighter
moment.

Yes, the cricket looks like it could jump out of the screen - a real 3d effect.

I've rarely try to take pictures of butterflies, but at the weekend while in the woods, they were pretty prolific and so I couldn't resist trying a few. These are with the A700 and beercan, which I'm not yet very good at keeping steady enough.

Perhaps a Meadow Brown?


White Admiral? (Could do with more dof and not having blown the white wing markings.)


I suspect this is either cunning camouflage, or just a very worn-out butterfly.

No butterflies here, no idea why - we normally get the usual common ones in quantity, and I have set aside a hundred square yards of untreated nettles just to provide a butterfly breeding ground.

The ragged one, I fear, was not well enough camouflaged - looks like repeated bird-bites from its wings.

I wonder if it to do with the weather this year? The recent damp, but still warm, conditions here in the Midlands have helped the bugs I'm sure. Perhaps an opportunity for Nettle beer instead .

I was hoping it was a Coma (?) or something like that when I took the picture but I think you are right - just a rather battle scared veteran.

Ossie- I like the cricket shot. I've never seen a green one. Great closeup of the fly. I can never seem to photograph flies.
Birma- I like the butterfly pics, especially the 1st and 3rd. That last one reminds me of an old picture of a de Havilland Mosquito that had returned from a raid, peppered with huge AA holes, and half of the vertical stabilizer gone.. But still made it home. Hopefully he can get some rest!! John

The woodland paths were still busy with butterflies last weekend.

Eyeballing a White Admiral (I think).


A Gatekeeper.


Both with A700 and Min 70-210/4 'Beercan'. I am begining to think that the sound of the Beercan focusing attracts horseflies. I didn't see one all day, until I found a subject that made the lens hunt a bit and then 'bang' I was bitten. A very good reason for SSM on lenses I think .

I missed the big insect event at home this week. There seems to be one day each summer when it is warm, humid, and dull, on which the ant nests around our house disgorge thousands of flying ants. I was away from home with work again this year for the event - my wife was not pleased that I missed all of the 'fun' again .

Today the sun brought the butterflies in the meadows and woods where I was walking. All with A700 and Beercan.

There were many of these small blue butterflies today. These two (with the female being more brown than blue) are in some sort of courtship. I met a butterfly 'census taker' while stalking these two who told me they are a type of Argus (I forget which) and not the Common Blue. I bow to his superior knowledge; he's been checking this patch for over 25 years!



Yesterday was a bit damp for the butterflies, but I spotted this one between the showers, who was at least not in a hurry. A Meadow Brown, or perhaps a Small Heath.


Ladybirds are not so bothered by the rain.


On both days I once again was the only one bitten by Cleggs - pesky blighters. I am still thinking it might be the sound of the beercan focusing that attracts them.
