By accident I discovered how to reach the very corner squares in the focus field. By pressing combinations of UP/DOWN and LEFT/RIGHT arrows. I have to say that the User Manual nowhere near adaquately describes fully how to operate this feature. You have restored my belief in Sony as I was beginning to think I had a 'bum' product. My thanks to you both for your help. I think we can safely terminate this thread.

Hi Kappelmeister - glad that the issue is sorted . I agree that the Sony manuals are poor at explaining things. I found it very useful to invest a small amount in a further book to get to grips with the A100 when I got it. The best Sony dslr guides would appear to be by Gary Friedmanhttp://www.friedmanarchives.com/. I have not had one personally, but they get rave reviews. I see he does one on the A500/550. I have also found the forum very, very useful. I hope we can look forward to dseeing some of your photographs .

I have, or have read, three of Gary Friedman's e-book manuals. All are excellent - clear explanations and good coverage of the features of the subject camera.

I have not seen Gary's e-book for the A500/550, but I have no reason to believe that it will be any less comprehensive and well-written than his other books - which I have found to be far better than any other third-party Minolta/Sony manuals I have ever seen. FWIW, the A550 is currently the camera that Gary normally carries with him and uses daily, so he can definitely bring hands-on experience to his A500/550 book.

Highly recommended - definitely a good use of your money, IMO.

Thank you for the recommended reading on my Sony camera. I shall certainly take a look at his work. Clearly I have found this Forum very useful and I have only been a member for a few days. When I get some pictures worthy of putting in front of a bunch of much more experienced photographers than I am, I'll be pleased to do so.
