Two Sigma Lens fails

I approached Sigma regarding my stripped 70-300mm - they didn't want to know, and as a bit out of warranty, I'm unable to return to original seller.

Any advice?

This must be mostly a Sigma problem you don't hear much about Tamron stripping gears or even many Minolta lenses (even cheap kit ones). I've 0 Sigma lenses and I'm not crying about it either! If I remember pulling apart a few old Minolta ones they have metal gears.
28-100 is no macro champ watch out for the blooming though..it's better on a film body being honest.

I'd take the lenses apart myself just out of curiosity, but I kinda keep thinking I may eventually find another duff one and make 1 good out of 2 bad. The 28-100 arrived, other than nice condition it isn't great (and that is a big understatement), very soft at 100 and just as bad at 28. It doesn't even come close to the Sigma 28-90, to be honest I'll use the kit Sony lens in preference....

I do have old Tamron 80-210, the only Tamron I've tried that isn't anything special either, again not matching even the kit lenses. I can't see my putting any more money into Sony lenses now, as it stands I'll probably wait for the Canon 5d Mk3 and change brands altogether unless Sony do something spectacular in full frame.

I was in a local camera repairers a couple of weeks back. A guy walked in with a Nikon lens only 3 weeks old. Somehow it got an eyelash in the middle of the optical path. He was told it meant a major strip down, because the hair was in the middle of the barrel not at the front glass. All non warranty obviously. Quote was $800 Australian. He accepted it and went for the repair. Any out of warranty work on lenses can be hugely expensive. You will need to decide on your quote if it is cost effective.

You could have picked up a 28-80mm D instead that's not bad and IMO probably a bit better than the 28-100mm D. Surprisingly the 28-100mm isn't half bad (for a kit lens) on 35mm, but you'll want to stop it down WA (expected really) and 100mm f5.6 is a bit soft (not unusable though), just not one of those lenses that works well on digital. But you might have a bad copy of it as I've seen some better than others.
28-85mm f4.5 is a good lens and cheap (not bad macro but it's WA not tele end) or invest in a 35-70mm f4 cheap enough and stupidly sharp across the range, dare I say stunningly sharp.

I'll look out for these, they'd need to be at throwaway price though. I think I've made the mental jump now, I think I'll not be buying anything more until I see the next Canon FF and maybe Sony FF (and it would need to be perfect) if it happens first. If I get really desperate I'll buy some quality glass for my old Canon 400d and then upgrade the body to the next FF canon.
