Well, this weekend I took the kids out to sight in the rifle for deer season, so this is what we shot.

This is Sam with her bulls-eye. Of course, it's the 50 yard target, so it's way low, but she felt good that she got it in the red.

The bullet spray all over outside the target is from my 5 and 6 YO girls shooting the .22 rifle. Most didn't make it to the paper!

The two at the top are the initial shots, then I moved it down 16 clicks and hit the bulls-eye. As I was squeezing the trigger on the second, my cell phone rang (we never get reception there!) and the one in the 6 ring is the result. Frustrated, and running out of light, I snapped off another and landed in the 8 ring. NOT good enough for a Marine, so a careful follow-up confirmed the rifle's zero by touching the first bulls-eye.

What are those holes Dusty .243, 6mm? (pretty good btw), you're not shooting over 100yds with a .22 yourself, of that I'd be fairly sure.

Yes, a .243 Winchester in a Remington 700. They guy we're going with this year loaned it to us for the youth hunt this weekend. In the pat Sam used the SKS (7.62x39) with open sights. He though the scope would be a big help.

Her very first shot with it, she wouldn't listen to me "I know how to do it Dad!" and got 'scoped'. For you non-shooters, that's what happens when you let your face creep up too close to the rifle scope and the recoil bangs it into your head. After that she listened!

Hopefully we'll have deer to post next week. I just hope it's not a real nice one, I can't afford to get the head mounted!

Ha .243W, I had one when I was a few years younger, mine liked the 87gn Hornady but the bullet seating depth was rather critical to get tight groups. I wonder why the owner got the 700 in a Win cart instead of the 6mmR ?

Popularity! Go into any rural hardware store and you can find .246, not very likely you'll find 6mm. You can also always find .223, 30-30, .308, 30-'06 and .270. After that, it gets iffy.

Yep I suspected as much, it's odd thinking though on two counts, most people here (and I thought it would be similar there), that own those calibres do handloading, (price was the big attraction, less than half the cost, don't know what it's like thesedays though), so what's kept on the shelf mainly would be no great biggie too them, also the Rem 6mm is a slightly better cart design than the .243W; so it's a betamax deja vu type deal, the worse one captures the market. You could nearly say the same about the .270W and Rem .280 although the difference there is very small.

Ye went to Whitby! Richard couldn't afford it. The first time he has missed Whitby in a decade. They rent a cottage and share it between Goth friends. But he had to drop out and let the others do it this time, time and money both conspired against it.

The cliffs in the background give it away, I think - unless Murph has found something more local, this is the Whitby Goth Festival and the streets of the town will have been packed with characters in and out of costume, make-up, and character. I await Murph telling me this was actually just Cramlington on a Friday night.

David spotted it exactly, we had our autumn camera club trip, to Whitby and it co-incided with the Goth festival, they were a great bunch of people and loved being photographed.

Yeah my comment about the bride with the Predator was a little tongue in cheek, it was a touch hard to imagine a nice domestic Predator that in the movies occasionally hangs people upside down and skins them alive, just for fun.
Great costumes, they obviously went too a great deal of trouble and attention too detail, that Predator one for example looks like it came right off the movie set...amazing. Great photos btw.

Whitby is certainly a place of interesting contrasts - British bucket-and-spade with fish 'n chips seasisde, along side fancy dress Goths. Nice pictures Paul .
