Why the difference with the A33? Seems a bit unusual to see such a score for the A33 for low light.

Light lost to the mirror? A55 has newer sensor so despite losing light, it does better? Looks like A580 would score well over 1000bfitzgerald wrote:Why the difference with the A33? Seems a bit unusual to see such a score for the A33 for low light.

I'd love to know what margin of error these tests have. According to their site the D90 still beats these for low light.
I'm still of the view that these tests are of limited use in the field..might be fun for an academic discussion but not as useful as they would appear.

D90 and A55 lowlight score is within margin of error (ISO 800 vs ISO 900). These dxomark scores do give some clue. That is, A55's IQ isn't behind any camera with APSC sensor that they have tested so far, despite the mirror.bfitzgerald wrote:I'd love to know what margin of error these tests have. And A580 along with K-5 and D7000 would be highest rated cameras on dxomark. The only difference being that A580 would be $500 cheaper than the other too.

I really cannot comment on the value of DxOMark's measurements but according to this link
http://dxomark.com/index.php/en/Camera- ... r-rankings
it would appear that Sony's A55 is the best APS-C camera - sensor wise - at the present time, just matched by Nikon's D90 (with a Sony derived sensor). I would think that it is fair to say that Sony's A580 will do well when tested and probably become No. 1 for APS-C. Sony are doing something right.

Yes. Notwithstanding the howling and gnashing of teeth from mnay here, the A55 and A580 are extremely capable cameras.alphaomega wrote:I really cannot comment on the value of DxOMark's measurements but according to this link

Interestingly the K-x scored just as well and at £200 less than the A55 what can I say? lol

Thanks to Sony sensor without which it would be even a bigger junk. No AF points in the viewfinder, smaller viewfinder, less resolution LCD without anti-glare coating, no flippable LCD, slower AF, slower fps (more than twice slow), smaller buffer, worse movie mode, no AF in video mode, worse shake reduction system (that right there gives A55 an additional one stop advantage), no multi-shot NR mode (that gives A55 one more stop advantage), no sweep panorama, mirror slap blur (a problem that does not exist in A55), no GPS to tag photos. Kx should have been £500 cheaper than A55, but it still wouldn't have been worth it. Sorry.bfitzgerald wrote:Interestingly the K-x scored just as well and at £200 less than the A55 what can I say? lol

OneGuyKs maybe you can explain the unusually high sensor scores from the A900/A850 for low light high ISO. They score higher than APS-C lower density CMOS sensors that clearly in the real world defeat the FF Sony models in low light and high ISO.
The Km5d is ranked below the A390 a model that has a noisy 14mp CCD a sensor that is actually a bit worse than the 10mp CCD (itself no champ for high ISO)
DxO isn't worth a can of beans in the real world..it's a bunch of dudes/geeks who crunch numbers and probably who drank too much wine on a wild night out. Their DR numbers are pure fantasy as well..really it's a giggle and not much more. So the Canon S95 has 11.3 stops of DR? So that explains why it blows out all the time..hmm
Really you'll have to come up with something a bit more believable. Now I'm not suggesting the A33/55 are not good..I'd strongly suggest anyone who wants to make an informed buying choice, look beyond a bunch of fairly dubious/worthless numbers and either try one or bother to look at what they do in the real world. DxO cannot be taken seriously.

A390 and KM 5D score about the same for lowlight (around 600s). And the scores are based on equal print size. So if you resize the 14 MP A390's image to KM 5D's 6 MP, according to dxomark, the lowlight performance would be about the same. They are most likely right, and you are the one who is wrong.
The same applies to A900/A850. Resize them to lower resolution, say 12 MP, and they would be better than 12 MP APSC cameras.

Re: Dxomark: A55, A33, Nex
I disagree I think the newer APS-C cmos sensors are much better than the older 24mp CMOS one FF or not. Resizing does not help a lot here..the sensor just has more noise.
Owning a 10mp CCD model from Sony I can assure you it does not equal the 6mp one "Printed" for low light high ISO. The 14mp CCD is even worse...again resizing here won't help you.
Their numbers simply don't add up either low light high ISO or DR in the real world.
Not saying you can't get nice shots from an A900 or older CCD's but it would not be high up your list for low light shooting. Thus the high score for the 24mp FF Sensor low light is meaningless.

Re: Dxomark: A55, A33, Nex
What sort of a mindwarp is that? if you are going too downsize a sensor output too make it look good against another, you also have to downsize the other by the same percentage. When you buy an A900-A850 you are paying for a 24MP camera not a 12MP camera, so it has to stand or fall on it's merits AS IS.OneGuyKs wrote:A390 and KM 5D score about the same for lowlight (around 600s). The dxomark scorers are calculated at *EQUAL SIZE* (8 MP). That's a fact. I am stating facts. You are not.Greg Beetham wrote: What sort of a mindwarp is that? if you are going too downsize a sensor output too make it look good against another, you also have to downsize the other by the same percentage.
