One More Fogo Island Caribou (ISO 3,200 experiment)

Unread post by camperbc »

I wanted to try another shot at ISO 3,200 with my new A500, this time in black/white, and here's the result. When I was standing out in the cold wind I totally forgot to try ISO 6,400. Next time for sure!

He still sleeps directly below our living room window every night, even during our big snowstorm. Seems healthy enough; I suppose because he has devoured almost our entire front lawn! No sign of his mom, or any other caribou for that matter. Perhaps he's just plain lost? I just talked to a friend in nearby Joe Batt's Arm, and he has 60 caribou in his front yard!!

(shot handheld using my old Minolta 100-200mm f/4.5 lens)

I like it, nice work....... haven't tried much ISO 3200 with my A550, but for some subjects it works really well, took few iso 3200 no flash shots in a National Arts gallery was very impressed with the results

Too high key for my taste.

Lonnie, I think you are missing my point entirely. I only posted this image to show that the A500 is quite capable of good results at high ISO's. That's all. The fact that it's high key is totally irrelevant to this experiment.

Well, it's not irrelevant to the way you processed it and if I like it or not. With it being processed the way it is, with the white point and contrast so high, we really can't get a good idea of what the noise level is as many of the highlights have been blown out and there is no shadow detail (at least at this resolution). So in that regard, my comment is 100% relevant.

If you want to show us high iso results, give us 100% crops, so we can see detail and noise (S/N ratio). Give us your NR settings from LR or photoshop. There is more to this experiment than posting a pic.

Lonnie says: "...There is more to this experiment than posting a pic."

Nope. Sorry, that's ALL there was to this little experiment of mine; simply to see if a photo would turn out half decent at a high ISO. And it did, imo. I don't expect anyone here to mistake me for a pixel peeper. In fact, I am dead set against pixel peeping. I don't see the point of dissecting my images. I just enjoy taking pictures. So no, I won't be posting 100% crops just for the sake of argument. There's enough of that going on at the Sony DSLR section of DPReview. That's why I came over to this forum; to get away from the arrogance; the endless bickering over who is the better photographer, who has the best/most gear, who has the better PP techniques, etc. I will stick to what I enjoy... taking pictures.
About all that I can say about the above photograph is that, to my eyes, it does not look as though it was shot at ISO 3,200. That's the extent of my little experiment. I don't own, nor do I know the first thing about Photoshop or LR. Sorry to disappoint.

Well, then, it's not an "experiment" its simply a photograph. My training is as a scientist, so I'm a bit of a stickler on this point.

To me, it WAS an experiment. (and a successful one at that!) You see, I am not a scientist, just a regular fellow who happens to be a photographer. Have a nice day.

In the old days, I was against high ISO. Now things changed it. I'm really thinking of a camera with high ISO performance...
Nice shot.
