I Agree, beautiful, many think just another Starling, the iridescence within the plumage makes it one of natures stars.

It had us mystified, when I was at my sisters place last time they said two chickens had gone missing and all they found was a pile of feathers; we thought it might have been a dog or dingo, but today it all became clear. Earlier today, before I got down there again they discovered this Eagle in the back paddock, and it had another chicken...half eaten.

Wow that is an amazing 'garden' bird. I can imagine your sister is not impressed with losing her chickens, despite having this amazing bird in the garden. Do you think this is connected with the storm? I imagine a lot of the wildlife is suffering and this will make its way up to the top of the food chain I guess. (Just been talking to my brother in Perth WA about the fires there - I hope our PCA Bruce from Perth is ok. After all of the natrual disasters in Oz my brother says that if he sees 4 riders he's packing up )

Lvely subtle colours on this starling. It's pretty hard getting this close to a starling since I witness them to be pretty nervous around humans here. Yours is impressive a shot.

That eagle is not going anywhere soon from the way it's perched so comfortably up there, Greg. Sorry to hear of your sister's losses but indeed this may be an eagle who's really lost its own direction to look for food as Birma says.

All birds must have suffered the cyclone Yasi and wildlife is bound to be the first to be feeling the pressure for food.

I like your photos very much though. Nicely and neatly captured while it's weathering its wingpits.

This was shot through my bedroom window using a studio light and snoot attached zeroed on the seed cake. The a900 was about a yard further along (to avoid reflection as far as possible) on tripod with remote. There was much trial and error as you can probably imagine!
This little guy was shot the same way (I know its not bird but hey..)

Thanks Birma, Yildiz and caporip, I think that Eagle is a young bird that has found some easy pickings, (I couldn't get as close as I would have liked though, it flew off), my sister said a couple of the chickens went missing before the cyclone even struck. The severe winds don't seem to have bothered the bird population very much except for stripping off all the blossom, fruits and nuts etc. I still seem to have quite a few doves too feed so I'm amazed at their ability to hang on to a branch that is being hit by high winds and gusts...not so many Pigeons around though.
I didn't understand the fire over there in WA Birma, they said someone using grinder caused it, that seems peculiar, normally it takes fire to make fire, I've used grinders many times and the sparks that come off don't seem too have the temperature for starting fires by the time they get down to ground level...in any case if some grass or leaf litter started to smoulder one could just stamp it out, it's very odd.
Anyway we haven't had an earthquake yet, or a tidal wave, so I guess we have that to be thankful for.

A bit of palnning ahead does wonders for a good frame like that; time-consuming but worth such a beautifull Starling shot.

The mouse is only two wings short of a bat ... hardly can be called a bird but still very close to the topic..being able to fly and such.

I don't see mouse very often here but this one looks cute. : )
