What about an electric car on an icy road at night with the heater demister, headlights and windshield wipers on? How much sooner is the battery going to fag out under those conditions? Will it still get you home?

yeah, gas cars NEVER break down.

it's a giant storm. avalanches everywhere. Taliban are after you. But you forgot to put gas in the car because that last station was $5.00 a gallon. What are YOU gonna do?

It's as if the mere picture of an electric car is controversial. Wait, I think I see Al Gore lurking in the background....

Ha ha taliban no less, btw I never said gas cars don't break down, but I'm sure they would be more reliable (if in good condition) for extended duty when required.
I wonder if we can get a law passed for salvage rights, like at sea; because the countryside is going to be littered with these things in a few years, I'd be willing to wager a beer that someone will drive one out into the Simpson desert sometime...for sure, they do that now in normal cars and get lost...for keeps. One was found not so long ago, accidently by a station hand, a female that had taken a wrong turn and there was her skeleton besided her car, been missing for a year and no one knew where to search for her.

Ha ha yeah right, it's only a question of time, it'll happen. A pair of seasonal workers, fruit pickers, odd jobbers...whatever, decided to take a shortcut from southern West Oz up the Canning stock route instead of going the long way around to the NT. Their 1970 model Landrover broke down (flat tyre) less than a hundred Kms (still the odd thousand kms to go) from the remote station they left from, their bodies weren't discovered for months, they didn't tell anyone where they were going...even their dog died with them. They had begun walking back the way they'd come and didn't make it. Had they gone the other way...forwards, one of the still operational water bores was only a few kms away from where they stopped....they didn't even have a map of the route and the placement of the water bores along it...put there long ago (by ancient steam tractors and sled drill rigs) for when they used to drove cattle along that route. Those old guys who put those water bores there knew the country and knew how to survive, no SAT phones, no EPIRBS, no rescue Heilos, no radios; you got bit by a snake you died, run out of water you died, you broke a leg even, you most likely would die.
Compare them against todays frivolous drug sniffing generation with their poofy electric cars...the mind boggles.

Yes, Greg, real men are a dying breed. However, after the next economic breakdown, we'll see a re-emergence of them. Mad Max for real!

The cost of going farther: (from automobilemag.com) "We’ve long heard the Model S will start at $57,400 with the smallest 160-mile battery. Blankenship also disclosed the 230-mile battery will add another $10,000 to that cost, while the 300-mile battery will be a not unsubstantial $20,000 on top of the base price."

$10k is the cost of 2,857 gallons of gas at present prices. On a car getting only 20 MPG, that's 57,000 miles of driving, and 85,000 at 30MPG. That's just to purchase the extended range batteries, you still have to charge them every 230 miles.

So you can buy a Tesla and I can buy a Hyundai, and I can drive my car about 5-6 years for the cost of you buying extended range batteries. Yeah, those electric vehicles are real bargains!

Don't worry Doc, I like being a grumpy old man occasionally. I agree the photos are great and the lens is obviously of very high quality, if a tad old style with the MF and f-stop ring, (the way lenses should still be).

Yes, Doc, I'm easily diverted to a different subject! I've always enjoyed good debate, and there are many subjects where I believe people hold their opinions for the "feel good effect" of holding them. Energy is one of those areas.

I actually came up with a concept of a hydrogen powered car when I was 14, but my Dad (always the supportive type  ) said: "That must be stupid idea or someone else would have done it already." 2 years later, such a car was the cover of Popular Science Magazine! However, we're still many years away from being able to economically change from the current petrol powered people pushers, as the Tesla (and other) electric/hybrid costs show. Also, as Greg pointed out the collateral damage to the environment that they create are never figured in to the final benefits.

Yeah I never really paid it no mind actually, I just assumed he was talking about digital; what with the advent of SLT’s and a liberal dose of PP you can equal a surrealist abstract with little connection to reality at all, finger painting just takes longer to get a similar result.
