Interesting shots of the big event. I like the shot of all the photographers. I wonder if that area is first come, first served, or if there is some sort of order.

Thanks Greg. All the better considering I'd had a couple of beers at that point. My friend thought it was a 50's model. I don't know how to date those things, as they are all so similar. I just can't imagine a family on vacation with kids in the back, and luggage in that rack, making it anywhere that wasn't downhill both ways and a stiff tailwind as well.

I do like the quirky nature of this thread.

The old Beetle sent me off to look through old photo albums (in binders, remember them?!). Here is a grainey scan of a poor photo of our first car; the marvellous Citroen 2CV. I guess it was designed in the same era as the VW, and also as a car for the people.

Ours must have been from one of the very late production runs, late 80s. We were very proud that it got us from Worcester to the Hebrides. Here it, and we, are having a rest at at the highest point of Glen More on the Isle of Mull. It was actually quite good on the poor single track roads. It was motorways it didn't like. I still well remember the image of huge lorry radiator grills completly filling the rear view mirror as we struggled up inclines on the M6 with the 602cc air cooled engine clattering along for all it was worth.

It was a day or so after this picture was taken that we got a flat. I took the wheel to a small garage (still on the island) and the guy working there took it in to the large corrugated iron shed that was the workshop I guess. He came back after ten minutes. "It was the valve" he explained. I reached for my wallet. He scratched his chin. "Mmm, call it 54 pence." He didn't have much change on him so we settled for 60p .

It's sortof like a French version of a VW beetle then Birma? The shape looks familiar, I think there was one in one of the comedy shows but I forget which one, where they wanted to portray the owner as eccentric I guess; it was'nt Fawlty Towers...might have been Some Mothers do Have Em maybe.
Anyway it looks like it would have been fun, and sort of intrepid.

This is in Montmartre, Paris in 2006. I think this is probably the same car, right?

Great shot of your first car Birma...Those things are from a simpler time for sure... I have tremendous respect for the bravery of people that drive Smart Fortwos here in Texas. Our big SUV's would punt them into next week!

Hi Henry - spot on! That looks like some fancy special edition but it is a 2CV alright. The roll back roof and the flip up side windows - great. It looks in very good condition. Perhaps they kept making them longer than I thought.

Thanks John and Greg. It is amazing how much bigger cars continue to get, even in the UK. I am glad to now be in something a bit bigger (and safer in case of accidents) when on the motorways.

Eccentric?! Well, I think that is one reason the girl in the picture agreed to go out with me in the first place - the car perhaps made me seem more interesting than I was . After a while I must have shown some promise as she eventually married me .

While I was in Austin recently I spent a lot of time scanning some old slides and negatives. This little boy in Japan is in front of his house wearing his mother's shoes in 1988. That was 23 years ago and in this photo he looks to be about 3 years old. That would mean he is about 26 now. I wish I knew who he is so I can show it to him.
