Two Kiddos

I shot portraits of a coworker's kids this past Monday (Memorial Day, here in the States): I started off using my 85/2.8 SAM, but the kids wouldn't stay still enough for that focal length, so I went a tad wider with my 50/1.7 which was just about perfect--except then I missed the sharpness of the 85! Ive got more keepers from these two little ones than any of you would ever want to see, so I'll just start it with these three shots. What do you think?

Hi Kevin,

These are really good. I like the way you handled the b&w treatments. The first one reminded me of film shots taken in the beginning of the 20th Century; barefoot and chiffon dresses with the light pleying the highlights around the hair tresses..

Kevin, I know I'll be asking too much but chiffon is a very special fabric and I think the colour versions of these frames might also be as enchanting in a dreamy kind of way.

Any such you'd like to share? : )

Looks like you were crouching down for the first shot anyway, yep I like that one the best too I think, I like the fine texture in them all.

Though all shots are excellent, I would give my preference to the last shot. B&W is awesome, though would be interesting to compare with the colored original.

I'll share more after the client gets their copy. I don't want all the world to have seen the pictures before they do! I did color and black-and-white processes of every shot, and these were just some of the most impactful in B&W. You might be surprised by the colors of their dresses, though, Yildiz. They're not what I would have picked for the setting, or for these fair-skinned girls, but I think it all turned out well.

Hmm, since you think the colours of the dresses were pretty unmatching to the surroundings, the b&w versions kept any colour-cluttering off of the frames then, which probably was for the best because they also have a feel of rising above reality and gaining a transcendantal appearrance. Two little fairies' play day!

Kevin, I don't know if you studied many, many good photographers' works before shooting portraits for your firends and faimly but the positive change is immensely visible in your latest shots. I think you're acquiring a feel of understanding the characters of your subjects and working your way into finding their sweetest moments while using the available and whatever artificial lighting to your benefit.
