Drove through this historic place on the way home from a golf tournament. I could actually feel the history. Taken with the a900 and the Minolta 28-70mm 2.8 G (old faithful).

I only had a short time on my hands to look at the forum lately for having a small garden pool renovation on my mind. Now that some things are resolved I can feel free to comment on some great photos. Sorry, for appearing as though we all went deaf and blind at the same time. : ))

What amazes me is that everything that pertains to the historic event is so well kept and no vandalizing had taken place at such a common roadside where anyone can stop and harm these reminders and there's crop growing in the fields too.

I usuallly feel like you do; as though the old souls are still there and lingering to see how the place is holding up. We have such sites where we barely whisper as to not to disturb those that have fallen...it's such an overwhelming, thick emotion that one finds almost tangible in the air.

Thanks for sharing the national pride and historic places. : ) Now go play some golf and find more interesting bits like you've been doing lately, please! : ))

I've driven past the city, but never had the time to stop at the battlefield. Oh how I wish I had! I've been to other Civil War battlefields, but this one and Vicksburg are on my 'must do' list.

A great book is "Debris of Battle" the story of the aftermath of the battle.

Quite a while ago one of the US warships that paid a visit here was called Antietam and I thought it was such a curious name I never fogot it, it wasn't until much later I learned that it was the name of a place where there was a battle in the Civil War, apparently that was 'bloody' as well.

Never a need to apologize Yildiz. We all have lives to live. Sometimes they involve pictures, sometimes not. The fact that I stayed at the top of the board is the best indicator that folks had other things to do.
It is a clean place in part because it is a small town (still) and there is really only one reason for outsiders to be there (no offense to residents). Giiven that, the statues are a great help in projecting one's imagination onto the battlefield. For instance:
Soldiers were trapped on these tracks which are called "The Cut". The tracks lay below the field on both sides and present horrifying choices to the troops that are trapped. Do I raise my head or follow the tracks to the turn? Do I wait it out? Either way, you have the low ground.

Yes, Antietam has the nickname here of "The Bloodiest Day". More people were killed in that battle than in any other single day in the history of the United States. More were actually killed at Gettysburg, but that was a three-day battle, and the total losses of those three days was greater than that at Antietam.

Incidentally, for those with an interest in history, I strongly recommend the 1993 film "Gettysburg". It is rather long (4 hours and 21 minutes), and some people complain because of the number of scenes that involve the characters just talking among themselves, but I enjoy it because of the work that was done to be historically accurate. Which makes for some interesting moments - there are scenes which you assume were added by Hollywood for dramatic effect because they seem so improbable, but which come from the history of the actual events.

Tom while I was doing some paint stripping I got to thinking about what you said about the Gettysburg movie, and the more I thought about it the more I was sure I've seen it years ago, but as a TV mini series, http://movies.tvguide.com/gettysburg/129350 great show. I remember things like soldiers lost in the fog with trees all around not sure where they were or where they were supposed to be and getting ambushed etc. and the defence of the town mainly in the hills near the town...the crazy walking forward line abreast thing against defended positions getting shot to pieces....
I saw another series about the all black division? and they kept getting a raw deal with supplies like boots, food, even guns I think, they all wanted the chance to show that they could fight and the white Major? raised hell getting them recognition and equipment, in the end they were tasked with charging a rebel fort that had claimed many lives previously...that was a good show as well.

That was quite the TV series Greg, one hell of a production. Even Ted Turner was in the cast.

Pretty good period depiction photos whosever they are DA, I guess they would have looked scruffy like that after being in the field for some time. You might have to elaborate about what Shirley was involved in so someone from the antipodes can understand.

Greg. The Outer-Limits was a series from the 60s which was brought back in 95 for 6 or 7 years. Stephanie was the costume designer for the show, all 183 of them. One week she would be creating the battle garb of the civil war on 200 extras and principal actors..the next week would be outfitting the crew of a star cruiser in the year 2499. The pics I put up were from another show , so now the right ones in.
