Waikiki Independence Day Outrigger Canoe Races

Yesterday for the 4th year in a row (somehow I missed seeing it in 2007) I was down at the beach for the annual Independence Day Outrigger Canoe Races in Waikiki, Hawaii. I have added some new photos to my website so please take a look! The 2011 photos are at the end of this gallery and they have the 2011 label on them. It was a fun day!

The 2011 photos were all made with the Canon 60D + Sigma 10-20mm and I used 10mm the whole time which meant I was wading out in the water, sometimes up to my chest, and getting close for most of the shots. Of course, I was careful and the camera remained dry, but it meant raising it above my head sometimes.

I looked through your gallery. I have to say I envy you living in such a beautiful place. You give quite a good impression of the things going on where you live. Lots of things going!

These also give a good impression of young and old having a great time. Good job and you had to have a blast recording this event. I certainly would.

Yeah, it is a lot of fun each year to walk along the beach during the races and take photos. Always lots of people there for the event, especially lots of local people and not just tourists. Many people bring their children too so they are all happy playing in the water and I am right out there with them with my camera.

Thanks! Yes, I was! Each year I like to get out there in the water with the people I am photographing. This year my wife was walking along the beach too with a digicam and later I found that she took a few photos of me.

Yes, lots of fun and that is why I photograph it each year. It is also one of the rare times when lots of local people are there on the beach and not just tourists.
