Thanks Greg. I think you are right that it is some type of Orchid, but I'm not sure. I'll keep looking to see if I can find it.

Nex 5 with SEL18-55

That one is def an orchid John, but I don't know what one.
Nothing wrong with mundane Birma, your mundane might be quite interesting to me, like those. I saw an interesting thing on TV recently about acorns, apparently there are two different types and the squirrels were treating them differently according to the way they store them and eat them, even though the two types are not easy to tell apart, smart little animals those squirrels.

Thanks Greg . A few years ago they had a 'squirrel brain of britain' competition where people devised cunning peanut feeding stations for thier back garden and then videoed the local squirrels solving how to get at the peanuts - the winners had to solve quite complex sequences of actions to get at the nuts. They are obviously good at problem solving .

Trying some close-ups with my new Nex today.

All shots hand held, leaving the Nex on Auto ISO, shots are jpegs (I can't process Nex RAW in my version of Elements - doh!), with slight touch of levels, resized, and sharpened for web size pics.

First of all with the SEL 18-55 at 55mm. Very slight crop.

With the SEL 18-5 at 55mm with Minolta CL49-200 CUL. The camera still autofocused (just) despite the CUL, and then with DMF and manual focus assist it was great fun to use!

SEL 18-55 + CUL again. Live view and flip up screen was pure joy .

Tamron 60mm f/2 with LA-EA1 adaptor. The Tamron focused nicely with its lens focus motor. Not super fast, but then it isn't that sort of lens anyway . MF Assist isn't automatic, but still a great feature - did I mention focus peaking .

Nice shots Birma. I'm still impressed by the IQ using that CUL. I have to envy everyone else's tomatoes. Ours are just about dead... John

Thanks John . I'm really pleased that the CUL I have is 49mm, matching perfectly the Nex lenses! The single Tomato plant is our entire crop. We are lucky that it needs little special care as we have no green fingers. Sorry to hear your's is frazzled.

The garden looks nice and green Gio67 . There is a strange blur on the right hand side of the picture?

Good closeups Birma, what I’d be interested in knowing from your first hand experience is how good is that LV focus actually when you are doing close ups. Like does it relay instantly so you know when the front tip of a petal is in focus or does a perceptible lag show up in the photo afterwards? Same thing when doing an insect or spider at high mag you really need to know exactly on the instant when you have that focus you want, if it can do that I’d rest a lot easier with considering a NEX seriously, that’s probably the really important thing I just don’t know enough about with the NEX.

Thanks Greg . I haven't noticed a perceptible lag, but I have been looking at static subjects. I'll have to do some more trials and let you know.

Both shots are beautiful. The first a lovely seasonal shot of the butterflies snd the Hibiscus shot is a dreamy success of colour and DoF; sweet and exciting bokeh there.

Charlie, I wouldn't say that the bokeh is pretty nice for that Nikkor-S but quite interesting wide open, though the 5.6 variant is much more pleasing. Thanks for sharing.

... and frankly, I'm getting quite jealous of your wide array of lenses.

And as if Sony specially designed the NEX just for you.
