probably because they are more familiar with Canon or Nikon than with Sony. I recall a conversation between DK and Carl about it, stating that they can do better reviews because they can explore better the Minolta/Sony system.bakubo wrote:The question that comes to mind is why these same people seem to have so much less trouble shooting jpeg photos for their reviews with Canon, Nikon, etc.?WaltKnapp wrote:One should also think about the experience levels of the folks shooting these samples. Most undoubtedly don't routinely shoot jpegs and that may account for some missed settings with the samples. They are simply unfamiliar with how to optimize jpeg shooting with the camera. Why rushed out early samples should be taken with a grain of salt....

Don't the reviewers usually shoot their jpeg review photos using pretty much default jpeg settings? Are you saying they are tweaking all the jpeg settings to get the best results from Canon, Nikon, etc. but for Sony they don't do that? For the last 5+ years I only shoot raw with my DSLRs so the jpeg results are not that important to me, but for many people, Walt for example, jpegs are very important.pakodominguez wrote:probably because they are more familiar with Canon or Nikon than with Sony. Re: dPreview A77 samples
I used to be very critical about the JPG engine on the A700/A850/A900 specially coming from the KM 7D and it's outstanding JPG quality.alphaomega wrote:Let's wait and see what seasoned operators can get out of the 24Mp cams using proper RAW conversion software. These are not primarily Jpeg type cameras anyway.
This year one of my clients asked for a backup photographer for each event he hires me, so a couple of friends (Canon 5DII, Nikon D90, Nikon D5000) and my brother (Nikon D700) did the job, but I process their files: even the D700 JPG (probably the lens my brother is using, the 24-120, is not the best from the Nikon factory) looks poor if compared to the A850. Technique helps, of course, but those cameras that are "Jpeg type cameras" like the D90 or the D5000 are behaving poorly.
Anyway, I expect the A77/NEX7 having a better JPG engine that what the samples we have now shows -even if I don't use JPG that much...

I don't know: ask the reviewers...bakubo wrote:Don't the reviewers usually shoot their jpeg review photos using pretty much default jpeg settings? Same here, I use JPG only for small gigs. I even stop using RAW+JPG (that I used to in case I needed to print something in a rush)bakubo wrote: For the last 5+ years I only shoot raw with my DSLRs so the jpeg results are not that important to me, but for many people, Walt for example, jpegs are very important.

I shoot RAW + JPEG and only go back to the RAW if I have a problem with the jpgs. Saves a lot of time!pakodominguez wrote:Same here, I use JPG only for small gigs. I would imagine RAW + JPEG on an a77 won't save money either. I can envisage a large expenditure on big memory!Dusty wrote:I shoot RAW + JPEG and only go back to the RAW if I have a problem with the jpgs. Memory is cheap, and so is storage (hard drives, usb, etc). Long ago we had to pay a lot of money every time we pressed the shutter - film, developing, proofing and printing - and we learned from it to take better shots. Now, we take more because they're 'free' and complain that our cards fill up too quickly!Atgets_Apprentice wrote: I would imagine RAW + JPEG on an a77 won't save money either. We need to re-learn shutter discipline, and then also learn to jettison bad shots from the HD. Also pay for a few more cards! They're a lot easier to carry then all that film!

Re: dPreview A77 samples
When Nex was launched last year, the forums were flooded about "terrible" IQ and horrible lenses. People were claiming that even the Alpha Zeiss lenses with adapter performed horribly on Nex, and of course the "native" kit lenses were worst ever seen, in the history of the universe.
You can search all these threads (hundreds of them) on DPR (both M4/3 and Sony forum).
All this noise evaporated when real samples from users and real reviews started popping up.
I am betting the same will happen here. Wait a month or two.
