Paul Genge thinks my existing older full frame lenses will be OK with the A99, at to the extent of advising me not to sell them all even I like the A77 a lot. This is actually a rumour which should be top level, as the plan for this camera has been well known since photokina 2010, and even the 36 megapixel spec has been a near-certainty. I thought it might be closer to 40 megapixels if based on the same sensel size as the 16 megapixel sensor, 36 indicates it will be based on something closer to the 14 megapixel sensor, and therefore not too demanding on lenses.

But I'm not sure just how compatible older lenses will eventually be. The A77 is already restricted in use with older lenses, and will not be able to use some functions (like lens corrections) with even fairly recent glass.

Calling a totally fixable software glitch that hit only a limited number of cameras a disaster, is more than just a bit overblown.

If you are already an A77 owner and you are experiencing some black out issues try this:
1. Turn off A77.
2. Take out battery.
3. Insert battery again.
4. Press these 3 buttons (Menu+Movie+Ael) simultaneously.
5. Turn on A77 and keep the 3 buttons pressed for 5 seconds. There will be a green spot “blinks” on the lower left corner of the LCD screen. Then “alpha logo” should show up again.

Has Sony made an official statement on these problems yet?

One thing about the rumors about a firmware update that will fix all these problems that I wonder about is that some people have the problems and some people don't. Usually firmware problems affect everyone. Maybe there is a yet unknown sequence of actions that trigger the problems and that explains why some people have the problem and some don't. Or, it may be defective hardware in some bodies.

When I said disaster, I was referring to the shambles Sony has created with substandard cameras being released, their appalling customer service, and the fact that they couldn't give a faeces about after sales.

Here's something to consider: The list of cameras in my signature includes a lot of Minoltas. Not one of them ever went wrong, or let me down. Of the four Sonys, two I didn't have long enough for them to go wrong, because they were disappointing, and both the a100 & a580 have had to be repaired. OK, I know cameras are a lot more complicated nowadays, but all those Minoltas were cutting edge for their time. Sony have take the Minolta legacy and pissed all over it.

How many people here are REALLY happy with their Sonys? I was, for three and a half years, with my a100, but since "upgrading" through the a200,300 & 580, not so much. At the risk of repeating myself, I'll say it again. My next camera will NOT be a Sony.

I think Mark, me, and others wouldn't be too upset about getting 2-3 years of defect free use out of our Sony cameras. Mark got a few days with his A77 and I got a few months and 3500 photos with my A700. I would be jumping for joy if either one of my Sony DSLRs got 2-3 years of defect free use!

My A700 lasted over three years (before I sold it, and it still had an extended warranty with it) and basically just needed focus calibration. My A850 is working well and so is the A55. I am quite happy with the Sony cameras that I have, even the 5N that I am having repaired for the clicking noise. I don't know if it's luck or what, but so far Sony has done well for me. I do send the cameras back for focus recalibration every once in a while.

Sony has had teething problems with the A77 and 5N lately though. Hopefully, the glitches are temporary.

If I pay over £1,100 for a camera, I don't want "teething troubles" or "glitches", I want a quality that reflects what I just paid out, and a camera that will at least work when I take it out of the box. If Sony can't (won't?) do that right, they might as well get out of the camera business now.

I expect that fixing these "teething troubles" and "glitches" will cost Sony a lot, both financially, and in terms of lost customer confidence and loyalty. I hope that these are expensive lessons that Sony will learn from, quickly, and improve on, even more quickly.

It's simple then, don't be an early adopter. It doesn't sound like you are cut out for it.
