A77 @ 3200, birds in flight

One thing that has always puzzled me is how photgraphers capture birds in flight without a noisy shot. I would be out shooting and just watch them fly through them frame knowing my shutter speed would be to slow to work. But this was shot at 3200 ISO and no NR applied. I am getting close. If I had opened the aperture some and shot at 800 I think I could have really nailed it. Next time out I'll know. I really couldn't tell out in the field just looking at the LCD. Still not bad.

Nice scene with all the bird flocks, I guess they are migrating south at the moment.
I've never really tried BIF, as in single birds flying, I always thought it would be quite difficult to do well unless the bird is moving reasonably slowly. I suppose you need plenty of ambient light to minimise movement blur and noise control, at least EV15 or more at a guess. (And high quality glassware)

Good scene with three individual flocks...and somehow the noise level doesn't bother me at all, either because of the size of the photo or the time of day in the shot which already makes everything a little subtle in character.

There's much noise on the web about noise
Frankly, I see more of grain like appearance in a77 shots than a real noise (IMHO)
Nice shot, even I would grade it as an excellent one. I like looking at it and admiring it, so it's a nice shot for me. I don't get in details.

This is a nice fall photo. I agree with the others, the noise isn't bad--it is nice and even, not blotchy, and would clean up easily. However, your comment about opening the aperture and using ISO 800 would have been good. In answer to you and Doug about shooting flying birds, I do a lot of this photography at closer range (a few birds at a time) with telephotos. However, the trick is not to catch them as they go through the frame. Instead, it is like hunting with a shotgun. You have to pan, following the birds in your frame. This not only makes it easier to capture the bird in flight, but also reduces the movement of the bird relative to the frame. The shutter speed has to be 1/2000th or faster if you don't want blur. All of this also applies to other action photography, like auto races and rodeos....

I agree. Nice image, the noise doesn't bother me personally. I especially like the top flock of geese, they really add to the mood of the image.
