Moon and stars

Clear night so i tryed to get some stars, think this one with the moon was one of the best i got tonight.

Interesting shot, as if the powerful light is coming from an alien ship (for those who believe in aliens ) or from an aircraft.
13 seconds exposure, hmmm, not bad.

I like that star field Dennis the stars are really nicely done, it’s amazing how many stars the camera can collect, many more then the eye can see and the overexposed moon gives it some punch. I made a star map showing the constellations in a similar view/direction the photo was taken in my astronomy program if you would like too see it.

Greg sure i want to see the starmap, maybe the Dr can find his spaceship in there aswell

I didn’t get it orientated exactly right; it ended up a bit tilted compared to the photo (operating from memory) maybe I used/guessed the wrong location to view from (I chose a location roughly in the middle of England) and I had to wind back the time in the program to find when it was that the moon was above Orion, as in the photo as seen from the Northern Hemisphere.

Great image Dennis!

I tried to capture a similar shot many times from different points in Europe, but in every shot the stars would be trailed, like a rod in stead of a dot due to the slow shutterspeed. Could you enlighten us how you avoided that?

mvanrheenen i had that same problem to with trailing stars, it´s in this picture as well but i think its up to three things, time ( obvious ) the moon it self and the size of the picture (original size is 24Mpix 6000*4000 ) and the trails in that is about 3-4mm in after a 13sec exposure. in my other attempts for exempel a 6sec exposure the trail is about 2cm. So i think its the bright light from the moon that erases the beginning of the trails in this picture and scaling it down to ,1024 also helps alot.
And i have worked on in lightroom to bring out more stars.

my other advise is to point the camera north/south depending on witch half u live on,those stars stand almost stand still and exposure times is no problem, but there are not so many constellations there if that's what ur after.


Hope this make any sens for you, English is not my first language and it´s been a long time sens i used it in writing.

i am thinking of buying one of this it´s has a motor thats compensate for earth movment and u kan attach ur camera to it aswell with an adapter.

Dennis that mount + telescope at that price is probably junk (although I could be surprised, but I doubt it), this gets a good rep. http://www.astrotrac.com/Default.aspx?p=tt320x-ag although more expensive will give sharp stars even at higher magnifications than wide angle.

Thanks for the explanaition Dennis. Tge tracking system as Greg mentioned is used by a lot of space photographs. Google 'timescapes' to see what these systems can do.

Thanks Yildiz I didn't really get it spot on as it turned out, my map has the Pleiades in it and it's not in the photo, I think it must be just off the edge of the photo though...oh well.

greg yea i know it´s probably not any good but it´s cheap for testing, ur solution with arm is cool but i want to get higher res, i need to goooogle some more

Great shot. I really like stars and night sky. I used to spend nights awake on looking at the sky and finding the constellations.
With naked eye you would see about the same as in this picture if you are in a good geographical position ( as high as possible above the see level, away from big cities, eyes should have been in complete darkness for an hour or more, and etc)

The picture is taken in sweden 100km from stockholm inland in a town called Vasteras, if u need to put it into ur program
