Tokyo Gate Bridge and Rainbow Bridge

Unread post by bakubo »

On Saturday I was with several friends and we walked for hours at Tokyo Bay. We walked across the new Gate Bridge that crosses Tokyo Bay. The bridge opened just in February. When we got to the other side we then walked back. Here is some info about the new bridge:

This is a photo I took before we got on the bridge:

Later in the day we also walked across the Rainbow Bridge that also crosses Tokyo Bay. We walked across it from Obaiba and I took this photo. I also walked across it in 1996. This bridge opened in 1993. In the early 1990s when I lived in Tokyo that it was under construction. Here is some info about it:

It was very windy on the bridges!

Here is a photo I took from a boat on the bay of the Rainbow Bridge under construction in 1991:

Maybe this one could use a bit more contrast, but it was a foggy, misty day.

Nice sharp bridge photos Henry and quite impressive structures, it looks like you had an epic walk you would have covered quite a few Km’s on that excursion.

Neat b&w shots of the bridges and bridge constructions, Henry.

The technology and the design apprach are worth thinking on:aesthetics of them all are very catchy.

Thanks for sharing,

Great B&Ws Henry. I was looking at the third image without reading the text and it felt like something was amiss. Indeed it was, as the bridge was under construction then :)

Yes, the bridge designs are very eyecatching. The Yokohama Bay Bridge is another one, but I haven't walked across it.

Here is one more showing the walkway on the Rainbow Bridge:

Technology, good design and flowing lines and curves look very nicely pronounced in your B&W's, Henry.

I also like the material choice of the Japanese engineers for these bridges and the walkways.

Thanks for sharing, Henry. :D If you decide to make last minute visits to other engineering marvels in Japan, before you head back to the US mainlands, don't forget to share them with us please. : ))
