Butterflies

Unbelievable that the gorgeous butterfly actually waited through all the lens changes and tripod set-up, Dr. Harout.
We ned more like them!

Except for a difference in DoF, both shots are amazing in detail.

Congratulations on the new, shiny and apparently very useful Manfrotto. Would you mind taking a shot of the tripod with the actual set up for these shots. I'm curious about the head set and how versatile it turns out to be during a shooting...( if it's not much of a trouble, that is.)

Yildiz, it was in a similar way: you raise the center column, incline it 90 degrees, thus the tripod remains fixed, while you can use the center column (now horizontally lying) as a clock hand; so eventually you are pushing your camera back from the subject, change the lens and push it back very slowly, to not frighten the subject. Took this picture from Manfrotto's site

How do you stop the column sliding through Doc? I can't see any obvious locking method for the column when it's horizontal that's separate to the knob when the column is vertical.

Ps I had a closer look at the butterfly with my reading glasses on and I now don't think it's a young one after all, it's got some tiny ragged bits on the back edge of the wings in a couple of places.

That explains a lot. I read somewere that it can go as low as 11 cm. close to the ground surface too.


A very nice tool. : ) Hope to see more art with the aid of yor new Manfrotto. It's not the most reasonably priced tripod around but definitely worth the penies spent.

It's that knob on the tripod which fixes it.

Yeah well ok Doc but wouldn't that also stop it swinging like a minute hand if that's the only knob it has?

Ps It looks like it's a continuation of a theme, my 055CLB's collapse down to ground level like that as well but don't have the new fandangled horizontal thingyme for the column, just the pull out short segment that you drop in the hole after you remove the column, but then you have to transfer the ball head from one too the other as well. That new design looks like a much less time consuming idea but I'm not sure exactly how it works in practise.

I've got that tripod too, but don't have the patience to use it in the field for macro's

Went over the rivers to see the fall colors from the bluffs in Illinois last Saturday. (Very brown this years, do to lack of rains).

While at Pere Marquette Lodge, caught a few shots of the critters making use of the butterfly bush before it's frozen out.

This one is Samantha actually getting the butterfly to touch her.

I can't match anything in this thread - they're all too good. Best I can do is this. Must be pre 1987 since I took it in the Syon Park butterfly house which was destroyed Oct. 1987.
