That is quite a flamboyant outdoor decoration DA, (might help finding home after a night out), and a nicely presented house too, interesting photos.
There was an elderly Dutch couple living down the end of the street here and they had a couple of model windmills in the front yard, a small one and bigger one, they were there since I went to school and I don’t think I ever got around to taking a photo. I noticed they were gone now when I went past the other day.

Ps I was looking at a Google map to get an idea about the Dyke, where it was etc. and I noticed it looks like the USA is down the end of the street, I have no idea what that would mean in practice though, having the US-Canadian border running through your suburb.

Just down the road from us is the US. border, due to land extending below the 49th parallel. It is a very handy
to have a PO. Box in Point Bob for my online orders.

It used to be fairly common for people with an agricultural background to have a model windmill in their gardens in days past. I remember my grandmother also having one as she grew up on farmland in her youth. Nowadays you don't see them as much anymore, although I do know where at least 2 are. If I get the chance I'll take a photo of one for you Greg!

It must be handy being able to straddle the international border as well!

There was some more interesting light today and so I popped out to a favourite spot, still getting the handle on the new kit. Only about 12 miles from home, but considerably more snow! They must have had over 6 inches here. Where the snow had begun to melt there was 6 inches of mud.

A99 with KM 17-35 3.5-4.5 with Hoya HD Circular Polariser. I am really impressed with the Hoya HD range and I got this CP after seeing DK's recommendation. They feel like a quality product straight out of the box. The CP is very thin. There was a bit of vignetting on the 17-35, but I also had a HD protector on - I should have taken this off first, but it was a bit nippy to be fumbling around with filters .

The poor old windmills seem to expire rather suddenly, maybe the new owners decide they don't like them or such, a pic of one from Holland would certainly be the genuine article Mark and most welcome, although I suppose the ones here and in DA's area would have been made by Dutch people as well most likely.

ps Some snow you are getting there of late Birma, what I did with my KM17-35 was buy an oversize step-up adaptor ring and the oversize polarizer filter that would screw onto that (no vignetting) but you can't use the lens hood, you have to shade the lens with your hat if the sun is going to shine on the filter.

That's a good idea Greg. I went for the 77mm CP as 77mm is my widest lens diameter, and then I use step up rings with everything else that is smaller thasn 77mm. Perhaps I should have gone wider as you say. The Hoya HDs are getting into cheap lens prices above 77mm so I might just live with the LR vignette slider for the moment .

Greg, the Windmills I posted are the ones you saw as a kid, just down the road at 18 Martin Street, Townsville.

Doh! I didn’t look closely enough DA, besides it didn’t look familiar somehow, the foliage didn’t look like something in your area so that should have made me look more closely. Actually according to the map I found the windmills I knew always were at 7 Martin St. http://maps.google.com.au/maps?rls=com. ... CDAQ8gEwAA and one was high up on a stand, but maybe they changed to the other side of the road, I’ll have to investigate. (maybe they are setting out in the world like the gnome in that delightful movie Amelie)
Btw how did you know where to look to get a photo of that?
