Blast from the past

Nice one Sury.

Now another blast from 1974 a Hawker Hunter GA11 WT809.

This was taken using a Minolta SRT101 + 28mm Rokkor f3.5 by available light - problematic as the subject was more strongly backlit. Hand held with an aircraft jack (like that yellow one behind the port wing) for a bit of support.

This is an aircraft I looked after and fitted that Harley light in the nose, behind that all new glass in a red painted modified nose cap. There is another in the background, a T8 XL602, which was also on my charge and which later had a Harrier instrumentation fit and Blue Fox radar nose.

I'm sure I saw the T8 somewhere but can't remember where. It had the Sea Harrier FRS1 pointy nose?

There were three modified to T8M standard, XL580 which was once painted in that loverly blue colour (I worked on this one to, and at different periods separated by Sea Vixens and then Phantoms) with white as Admiral's Barge at Yeovilton. The other one with XL602 was XL603 which latter is now in the FAA Museum along with Concorde 002. I still have some Standard 8 cine film of 002's maiden flight out of Filton.

Mike am I correct in thinking that you are quite a prolific aviation photographer I seem to recall seeing your name elsewhere?

BTW the reason for this GA11 suddenly surfacing is that I have been in touch with the owner of the nose of WV381 which crashed in the Solent in 1972. Having done the Harley light and servicing on that one I strapped the pilot in and waved him out. I have just written up my account of the events leading up to that incident and some of the aftermath for Dave Webb to include in the next edition of his 'booklet' on WV381.

Edit. It is XL580 that is in the Fleet Air Arm Museum, I am not sure what state the other two are in or where they are, I did hear that XL602 was being restored for flight. I would be interested in a close up visit to that one as there could be something interesting in the port aileron shroud to do with the rear spar.

Yes I take a lot of aircraft piccys, occasionally post on UKAR or Fighter Control forums (my handle is Black Mike).

See also "I gave in...." in this section. We had a great day out at Leuchars for the Joint Warrior exercise whe they let 100 enthusiasts on base to see the visiting French Navy CAG detatchment. Superb photo opportunities, the best being the Super Etendards which don't have long to go.

I love the Ark piccys, just fantastic.

Here is that iron gate from the other side outlined against the sky

That iron gate is very beautiful and interesting. It reminds me of this photo of a similar piece of ironwork at Little Bighorn battleground in Montana.

Thanks, against the sky like that it takes on a kind of 3D quality with the light and shade in the clouds/

Little Bighorn - rather a controversial bit of history there if I am not mistaken.

Sury, the second shot is excellent. A few display teams do a stacked pass including the US display teams Blue Angels and Thunderbirds.
It is indeed the Canadian Snowbirds.

I do have a riposte to that but a bit further back in the past taken in Florida. That is all I will say for now as it is one I have not got around to scanning as yet.

Sury, here's looking up, all shots Minolta SRT101 on 25 ASA Kodachrome II with Rokkor 35mm f3.5, Rokkor 55mm f1.4 and Tamron 135mm f5.6 respectively, taken a few weeks before launch of Apollo 15 in 1971.

Looking up into the roof of the Apollo VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building), which could form its own clouds inside. This building was extended for the later Shuttle program.



Apollo 15 on the launch pad, colour may look odd but colour correction for grey on first stage produce over magenta sky so what is here is the best overall balance. It was a very bright, hot and humid day, is is why Florida is the lightning capital of the US. We were treated to spectacular light shows every evening. These shows being vividly viewed from the central static bar atop Ft. Lauderdale's Pier 66 building whilst the restaurant slowly rotating around, a full 360 degree view - wow!
