Gustav, whichever lens you use your pictures will still be wonderful
Don't take it as a compliment, that is a fact... and I join Thomas and Brian of becoming jealous

Not quite what you're looking for, but there's a thread on Dyxum comparing a Minolta 300/2.8 original to a Minolta 300/4 HS - note that there are 24 pics included...
...interesting results - I ended up wishing I'd got a 300/4 [for the weight] when I had the chance, but maybe then wouldn't have got my 2.8 when it came along a few months later [for only £40 more!]
Cheers

Re: minolta 300 2,8 HS or minolta 300 F4 HS
During my Baltic cruise earlier this year we passed a Russian submarine base and I shot about 1G of images with my Minolta 300 f4 HS attached to my A700, hand held. We were a good mile off and this image is greatly reduced for posting, but when I zoom in 100% on the original you can clearly see the camera in the sailor’s hand on the left (as we look at them) between the two subs.

After 27 years in the British Army all through the cold war I would never have believed I would take a photo like this – overtly
I don’t have both lenses to compare kingfisher, but the Min 300 f4 HS is an absolute beauty if that's any help.

I haven't owned (or seen) either of these lenses, so I can't offer any advice. But, Kingfisher, could you be contemplating the purchase of an a900? That 300/2.8 at full-frame will do nicely after you've been shooting 200/2.8 on APS-c crop.

Here's one from today, not following up your lens dilemma, but following the submarine reply!

http://www.pbase.com/davidkilpatrick/image/104717774 for original A900 full frame (no sharpening applied at all, as usual with my large samples)
Ik Zal Voor Gaan, says the motto on the crest for the Royal Dutch Navy - I Shall Go Forth/Forward, or I Shall Go Foremost/In Front/First (ahead)?
Docked at Edinburgh. I asked the submariners whether it was OK to take photos, and they said yes - with a gesture meaning 'of course'. All the gates for the dock were open so the public could see the Dutch submarine, but only a few people were bothering to go up close and have a look. It could be seen very clearly with the Royal Yacht Britannia in the background from the quay, and a good view was available from the restaurant levels of Ocean Terminal.
50mm f1.4 1985-type old lens, 1/125 at f10, ISO 100.

Re: minolta 300 2,8 HS or minolta 300 F4 HS
thanks ereyone for your answer
the positive of the 300 2,8 is when i want to work with a 2X converter , i have a 600 and he is F5,6
negative is that he is very heavy
i now that the 300MM F4 give`s you sharp picture`s and is not so heavy but , is not so good with the 2X CONVERTER maby the 1,4 CONVERTER
kevin
i am not so sure of the advantages of the A900 against the A700
POSITIVE
the A900 give`s you a very good IQ and colors by NORMAL ISO
NEGATIVE
if you dont have HIGH-AND GLASS THE profit against the A700 is not much
the AF the manual and the constuction is not better than the A700
a new investment of your computer stuff is necessary
for one A900 you have 3 A700
i think that the SONY A700 much better is than the CANON 40D and the NIKON D300
i think next year sony shall release a new MINIFULLFRAME the ( A800)
if i see the picture`s off the A700 , i think it is one off the best camera`s
a view day`s ago i had a weddingshoot , all of my picture`s are taken with the TAMRON DI 24-75 2,8 and the SONY 70-200 SSM
i shall open a NEW TOPIC later this day , in GIVE IT YOUR BEST SHOT ,
david
