Thanks Birma and Yildiz, actually the telephoto effect has made it seem like the tree was next door where the peaked roofs are (and the power cable which is just on the other side of the fence) but in reality the tree is in the next yard past the yard next door. The housing commission that built the house on the empty lot next door also replaced our low side fence with a new high one, they sure build big fences.
I have no idea what’s going on over there with the little old place on the other side, maybe they are going to shift the house and eventually build a new one like they did next door, (the process only took 25 years).

Another thing I have no idea about, why flies were sitting on the old orchid flower stems, it was very blustery today maybe they were just taking a rest.

Thanks Birma I thought it was worth going and getting a camera for, I don’t remember ever seeing them doing that before, it was quite odd.

Very interesting behavior from the flies, Greg. The spacing in between is almost identical in length...Not something I've witnessed before.

Thank Yildiz, it looks like they were attracted for reasons unknown, by me at least, to the point on the stem where a previous flower was attached, thus the spacing arrangements were organized in advance.

That is a fair size tree they are taking down in the back garden Greg. Very nice shot as he chucks one of the pieces to the ground.
Can’t fell the whole thing in one go with all the homes nearby. Some have tried with dire consequence.

Hi Greg,

Exactly my point. Since we don't see and feel through the brain of any of those flies, the first time I saw the image, I had the notion that where once a bud or a flower was attached may still hold some nutritious elements after the flower is gone; you know, like rotting away parts which may be sweet to these guys. All flies and insects love rotting away parts organic matters, hence my thoughts...


David Antony, that video indeed ends tragically. Hopefully no lives were endangered.

Good one DA, how not to drop a tree, smack dab on the neighbors’ house…crunch, I bet they were popular. (the tree (thanks btw) in my photo was in the front yard actually, they already had chopped all of the trees in the backyard a few days before, I took a couple of shots during that operation too but didn’t post any).

Yildiz, what in tarnation is this plant, (below) any idea? It appeared and no one knows what it is, probably a seed dropped by a bird…maybe.

Ps those flies are a different type to the pesky house fly, I’ve seen them before on flowers and tree blossom but not in the house so you could be close to the money about what’s going on. Only thing is the stem they were on and the old attachment points seemed to be dry and devoid of anything attractive, at the moment. But those Orchids (White Dove) do flower quite often with short lasting perfumed flowers. I think it’s the only Orchid I have that really sends out a strong sweet perfume, maybe the flies know it’s going to flower soon.

It grows seeds (I think) on the front and back of its leaves, the photos aren’t very good, the wind was blowing it around constantly.

Hi Greg,

That looks ver much like a 'Macaranga tanarius'. With its peltate leaf formation, it differentiates itself from other tree types. Wikipedia says it can grow up to 12 meter tree.

So you'll have to decide if you wish to keep it or not.

Wow well done Yildiz, I have no idea how you found that, hmmm grows to about 40 feet tall, I think it’ll have to go to tree heaven, mores the pity.

If you take a look at the leaf formation, it is peltate, meaning its stem is around the middle of the estate of the leaf itself and does not extend from the edge like many other leaf types. I searched for peltate leaves on the Internet and looked through the images and voila, there it was. It is an appreciated plant for some.

I hope there's a heaven for trees that accidentally grow in the neighbourhood like yours ...

Greg its a suspended sculpture (not sure what it is meant to represent, but its pretty cool:-
